Post Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Finn definitely gets a little short-changed in this movie. He doesn't really have much autonomy until his almost-sacrifice at the end. He wants to leave for Rey, he goes to Cantoblight for Poe, he destroys Cantoblight for Rose, etc... While Poe is learning that you don't always have to finish an attack once you start it and being the hope that lights the spark of the rebellion is more important than taking down a big gun, Finn is just getting to the point of being able to put yourself aside for the greater good. I agree that Rose should have died, like her sister at the beginning (and they also should have done a better job of linking these two), to really hammer this down, but I didn't hate her character and am fine with her getting some D once she wakes up.

On recent rewatch, I really appreciated the first half of the film a lot more. Still love the Rey/Kylo ForceTiming, but Poe's arc is what has improved the most. Yes it is frustrating that Holdo doesn't explain her plan to him, but he would've gone ahead and done whatever he wanted anyways, and the movie needs you to be sympathetic towards Poe even when he is clearly wrong. It's his failure in this movie that will hopefully build him into the hero the galaxy needs.

This is my third post. For people who blame The Last Jedi haters for The Rise of Skywalker critics review score on Rotten Tomatoes, blame Kathleen Kennedy and JJ Abrams. They were responsible for plotting the movie and cutting scenes for adding scenes of new characters like Zori Bliss and Jannah.

Deal. KK hires good people but has fired/lost half of them.

Yeah I'm very curious if she was pressured to fire Lord/Miller and Trevorrow. Or if she just thought she made the wrong decision.

There might be some fans for them out there, but after episode 1-3, it showed to me that Lucas doesn't really know what he's doing and he just got lucky with the OT. It was a good thing for him to give it up, can't imagine he would have a made a better episode 7-9.

I hope all you TLJ haters are happy about TROS review scores. This is your fault.

If twitter existed in 1980 they probably would have run back all the good stuff in Empire. Darth LIED! See guys, everybody is gonna be the same, no need to get upset.

SHEER. AWESOMENESS.

Best crowd since THE DARK KNIGHT RISES/AVENGERS. Endless clapping. This is the best Star Wars movie that I have seen in a theater by a MILE. A lot going on but thematically very powerful and wrapped up wonderfully. Reminded me greatly of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. MAJOR props to the ballsy director for actually moving the story forward instead of simply worshiping the past ala Abrams in TFA. Sorry, JJ, but this is a big boy movie. Da Force Awakens is for kids. Driver, Ridley, and Hamil are all totally aces here. Driver/Ren in 2 films has already destroyed Anakin in the prequel in terms of development and awesomeness. I admit the first half is a tad slow, Finn and co. seem like filler at best and as if the writers didn't know what to do with him considering his plot truly goes nowhere. Pretty much the same for Poe too. But the execution of everything once Rey leaves the island is simply flawless.

A few scenes truly stand out that are worth mentioning

Spoiler: show
1. It's been ages since I heard a theater react the way they reacted to Ren killing Snoke. It was all  :noway: :D   An incredible story turn executed flawlessly. So glad I avoided the spoilers there.

2. Holdo kicking into light speed & the silence aspect of it was :whaa:

3. Luke fucking Skywalker walking out of the tunnel and facing down the big bad army was   .

The entire theater erupted at the following moments:
-When he strutted into the room to see Leia :tears:
-When he stands before the entire army
-When the guns stop firing and he just like
-When Hux tries to lecture Ren & Res....silences him
-When it is revealed that Luke is actually calling on the island
-When Luke says "I will not be the last Jedi" as Rey rescues the remaining resistance

One big disappointment:
I thought Kylo Ren and Luke were about to THROW DOWN! The set up an epic duel that turns into Luke dodging a few swipes and then showing how he has fooled Ren. I suppose it was unneeded but it would have been hella cool.

I, for one, 100% assume we will see Luke in the sequel given that Leia obviously will not be in it.
But they have achieved something that the prequels failed miserably at: Kylo Ren and Rey are 100% interesting characters whose stories absolutely match the original trio. They have earned their place in Star Wars in their own right in a way that HC's Anakin obviously didn't and McGregor's OWK only did due to OWK legendary status from ANH.

A+. WELL FUCKING DONE to the director.

The theater reaction to Ren killing Smoke was all-time badass. That and Luke revealing his fake-out have to be the 2 most badass moments of the ST. 3rd would be Rey getting the saber. There really isn't a 4th sadly.

There are like 3-4 action set-pieces in this that are better than most anything in TROS.

I didn't hate this movie and aside from the middle act of casino it is an edge-of-your-thriller. The whole arc with Luke is dragged out a bit as well and Snoke's demise was anti-climatic but the fight with Red Soldiers is done nicely. The dynamic between Rey and Ren is easily the best part of this trilogy.

B+
