The Driver
Not bad. The opening car chase is really well-shot, and the film zips by very quickly. A couple of jobs down and before you know it it's over. And I love how there are no names to the characters. It's just The Driver, The Detective, The Player, Teeth, Glasses, The Kid, etc. But the film does feel like an extended episode of The Streets of San Francisco. The way it is scored, the two-dimensional characters (cop=bad, thief=good), the way the film is staged (starts with a heist, then the cops investigate, etc.), and the way it is shot in that 1970s style does give off small screen vibes. That being said, there are some great driving shots, especially in the opening getaway, and it is fun to see such a chase with stick-shift and [non] power-assisted steering, where it takes half-a-dozen turns of the wheel to do a sharp right, lol. Anyway, it was good to finally see The Driver and plug the gap in my action movie and Walter Hill seen lists. I'd heard about it before, and its simplicity in story and reputation made it an easy watch.

Re: The Driver
It's a cool film, buoyed by a nice 70's style it's enjoyable to sit through. Ryan O'Neal plays the stoic lead without much charisma though, but Bruce Dern seems to enjoy playing his character much more, and a few of the other characters are interestingly eccentric too. The story itself isn't really spectacular, it's a pretty one-dimensional detective going after a crook plot where not really all that much happens. The car scenes are well done, Walter Hill shows he has a knack for creating entertaining sequences, and the film has a good ambiance overall.
