Quote:
The Man Who Invented Christmas tells of the magical journey that led to the creation of Ebenezer Scrooge (Christopher Plummer), Tiny Tim and other classic characters from A Christmas Carol. Directed by Bharat Nalluri (MISS PETTIGREW LIVES FOR A DAY), the film shows how Charles Dickens (Dan Stevens) mixed real life inspirations with his vivid imagination to conjure up unforgettable characters and a timeless tale, forever changing the holiday season into the celebration we know today.

This is a very joyful, uplifting film and a welcome addition to the holiday-movie canon. It is a highly fictionalized depiction of Charles Dickens' writing of A Christmas Carol. It is also, in a sense, another adaptation of the novella itself because of a device in which the author interacts and argues with manifestations of his own characters; it is almost hard to believe Christopher Plummer has never previously played Ebenezer Scrooge, and he is, of course, superbly dry and scowling as popular culture's most beloved elderly miser. Dan Stevens shines, too, delivering a lively performance as a 31-year-old Dickens troubled by recent commercial failures (including Barnaby Rudge) while madly pursuing elusive inspiration. The film alternates from comedy to drama to fantasy with a light touch and, in its recreation of Victorian London, boasts high production values.

The Man Who Invented Christmas is a timely reminder that Christmas was indeed invented (twice). I found it to be a very enjoyable historical comedy, with a few salient points on the creative process. *B+*

It was OK, mostly thanks to solid performances from the entire cast and some lovely production design. But this feels stagey and very much like a paint-by-numbers made for television film. I went into it hoping for some Christmas spirit and left with none at all. C+

This was decent movie that brings out the personal front of Charles Dickens very well but I didn't get any sense of family and togetherness with his current family. Entire cast led by Dan Stevens is great in here and the visuals with period settings are done nicely. There wasn't enough Christmas uplift as I expected from this movie though Dickens' acceptance of holiday is done really nicely.
