I also worry when “firsts” receive tons of praise, but then again I was surprised by Wonder Woman

I watched this tonight and liked the movie but its definitely being over-hyped by reviewers. Its a great movie but nothing revolutionary that the reviews are suggesting. I won't put this in the top-tier of MCU movies and while the villain is admirable he ascends too quickly and then we get the finale. The fights while very well choreographed aren't as WoW aside from the car chase scene, definitely blows off the steam early so the ending feels muted in comparison.

7/10

I agree that the spectacular reviews heightened my expectations a bit. This is a very well-made, well-acted movie and it does have a lot more to say than your average Marvel film. However, it's not some kind of revolutionary masterpiece. The narrative is basically The Lion King and as per usual with these films it is overlong. I agree that there should have been more development to the villain because Michael B. Jordan gives a really fantastic performance. The women stole the show for me though, particularly Danai Gurira who was fantastic. The casino scene and the subsequent car chase are the highlights - what supremely excellent action sequences. I enjoyed it. B

It has what most Marvel movies usually don’t have and that’s a good, relatable villain. Michael B. Jordan makes the movie. Killmonger might be the first truly dramatic (tragic) character is the Marvel universe. What’s a shame though is that this is a Black Panther movie. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t Coogler’s intent, but Black Panther is the least interesting character in his own movie (outside of Martin Freeman). That’s not to say he’s bad (far from it), but he lacks personality. He’s surrounded by characters that are oozing with personality. Is it supposed to be regalness? Is it Chadwick Boseman? Or is it the character? I did spend a good part of the third act wondering if it would’ve been better if Marvel has gone back in time, knew they were going to hire Coogler, and then have him cast Jordan as Panther. I don’t know.

Aside from that the movie delivers. The action for the most part is really well done with the highlight being the underground casino fight in South Korea. It was also refreshing that there wasn’t a giant thing in the sky that needed to be destroyed. The fight on the train tracks looked kind of stupid though. The movie also looks spectacular. It is never not gorgeous to look at.

It’s good. I don’t see the “instant classic” some critics are saying it is, but it’s good.

I really enjoyed the film. I didn't think it would live up to the hype, but my expectations were firmly in check and I was mostly satisfied with it. The best thing about it for me though is how much it doesn't feel like your typical Marvel film which is very refreshing since I don't think I have seen anything like that since TWS. Michael B. Jordan kills it the most as the villain and is probably the best the MCU has delivered yet. I also thought Serkis was a lot of fun too, but he wasn't really used enough. I have to agree though that Boseman does get a bit out shined by other characters, but I don't believe that took anything away from his performance, because he has some great emotional scenes. The action sequences outside the Waterfall fights, and the Casino sequence are pretty damn messy though, especially that one at the beginning, and it doesn't help that the CGI is terrible at times as well, especially towards the end. The whole third act was pretty lackluster honestly.

Post Re: Black Panther
Very uneven movie, do not understand praise at all. Props to Marvel for actually making a film about something and featuring themes.

That said:
-execution is shit. This is literally the definition of "telling, not showing" with the whole "black people are oppressed" thing.
-The acting across the board is atrocious outside of BP's sister who steals every scene she is in. Hilarious. Boseman is so flat and lifeless, MBJ's writing is awful.
-character development is terrible as others have said
-the villain is again weak, appearing out of nowhere with zero development
-the hero big comeback doesn't feel earned or climatic at all due to horrid writing and Bosemans lack of charisma
-there is no tension whatsoever in the 3rd act at all as others have noted
-Black Panther gets his ass kicked in half of the fights

.Shocked at the reviews this is getting.

-The other thing is that for a movie about empowering black people, it features tons of stupid stereotype jokes. MBJ' always saying "Sup" to the 10 year old black kid at the end with the space ship saying "Lets break it apart and sell it".

It's not close to IRON MAN/Avengers 1/ CA 2 or 3. But it has a message which is very unique for Marvel. In Speilberg's human emotion hands this would be a BP type film.

This is a solid C.

Now, that I have had more time to think about it I am pretty certain this will hold its place in my top 5 favorite MCU films. As messy as the action is and as bad some of the CGI is I am still kind of stuck on just how effective of a villain Kilmonger was. This movie gets major points for making a bad guy equally sympathetic and compelling as he is despicable. Really only Loki, Vulture and Ego can be compared to this IMO, and I think MBJ brought something extra to the role that surpasses them all makes him somewhat memorable. The post credit scenes weren't anything special though.

The UN scene should’ve been in the movie. It’s his “I am Iron Man” moment.

I only figured out what was going on with the second one after listening to a podcast. I know these scenes are supposed to be short and can’t be too telegraphed, but it could’ve been a little more telegraphed.

That's cool bro. Nobody clapped at my showing, but they were very into the movie. Saw this again btw, and it definitely goes down better a second time. It really doesn't even bother me anymore how lackluster the action sequences are or how bad the CGI is, because this movie is super effective on so many other levels. The way it tackles certain themes without being too preachy or in your face is still something I really admire and respect about it, and in a Disney/Marvel movie of all things. What I do love about this movie though is definitely the world building and the way it presents the Wakandan culture. Michael B. Jordan's Kilmonger is still a beast of a villain as well and is so damn relatable that it becomes hard not to root for him which is pretty epic IMO, and he has to have one of the most powerful last lines of any movie villain. That theme is FIRE as fuck too lol.

I found it to be great, and yet another enjoyable entry in the MCU that builds on the genre. Marvel has been on fire the past couple years. The film could have benefited from additional character development, better pacing, and improved CGI, but none of this is glaring enough to offset how good the overall film is. B+.

Killmonger might be Marvel's best "villain" to date, and the only ones that could contest him are ones from the past couple years. The villains were among the MCU's weakest links, but they've really changed that around lately.

Black Panther

The best word to describe this film is mediocre. It has kind of reset all the good work that Marvel have done in the last few years with Thor: Ragnarok, Civil War, Homecoming, and both Guardians of the Galaxy films because of just how average it is. It was quite uneven and I couldn't get into the film at all until T'Challa is defeated and thrown in the waterfall. It was very unexciting for an action movie, and the fighting sequences were badly choreographed or badly shot, or both. Michael B. Jordan is good, but Andy Serkis is a better villain (and he nails the accent). Chadwick Boseman is just grating. His voice is annoying, and his character is just boring. He is essentially invincible as long as he has his suit on, which makes everything he does lose all risk, and therefore lose my interest. T'Challa's sister was a nice inclusion. Just a shame they couldn't make any of her jokes actually work.

I did like the occasional use of authentic African sounds in the score, and I had to laugh when Serkis blew apart that car and the African guard woman slid along the ground in just the car seat. But considering its out-of-this-world hype, Black Panther is yet another SJW-infused disappointment. And with Creed and now this, Coogler still has a lot to prove as a director.

Black Panther is wholly competent, but also wholly underwhelming. It's got some cool action scenes throughout, but for the first half it's quite an average endeavor where the story puts little at stake (it just feels more suited as a side-story). I then loved the turn where B. Jordan won the fight with Boseman though, as it also brought the needed spark to the film. But the film struggled to make things interesting, while cool in itself, the hidden existence of Wakanda felt unbelievable to me and the humor fell flat 90% of the time. I expected more from it (and Coogler in particular after Creed), the cast is fine, B. Jordan is a cool villain but Boseman doesn't command the presence a lead needs, his female entourage was more impressive. The standout character is Serkis' supporting role though and Freeman just annoys me with his American accent. I guess it fits in the Marvel Universe, but after a pretty strong start to Phase 3, this puts it back a disappointing notch.

Not even sure why he needs to have an American accent. It's a good accent, but it is pointless. And you're right it is a little annoying.
