Post Re: Jungle (2017)
An engaging and well-crafted survival drama by the talented Australian horror director Greg McLean (Wolf Creek, The Belko Experiment), operating in a more crowd-pleasing mode than usual while still staging effective moments of dread and wince-inducing bodily harm. Daniel Radcliffe delivers far and away the best and most intense performance of his career to date as an Israeli traveler who finds himself alone in the Bolivian jungle after a misguided trip goes awry. I only have one notable reservation: in the third act, the film leans (too) heavily on elaborate hallucinations to convey the protagonist's mental instability. These scenes, particularly ones transporting him to an American diner and a luxurious casino, are heavy-handed and distract from the sense of isolation and peril rather than enhance it.

The Thomas Kretschmann character is intriguing. I wonder, in the movie and in real life, what his exact motive was. I guess finding naive travelers to finance his search for gold. I wonder if he murdered Marcus and found a way out or if they both died.

A solid action/adventure drama with an admirable, physical and emotionally committed performance from Daniel Radcliffe. It's even more surprising to me that this is from Greg McLean considering his horror background, but apparently he is more talented than I ever gave him credit for. After this I honestly wouldn't mind seeing more stuff like this from him. Those hallucinations/wet dreams Radcliffe's character was having were a bit much though.

Jungle

This wasn't bad. It was not what I expected, but it wasn't bad. I expected a savage tribe to hunt them down, but nothing like that happens at all. I wanted Lost City of Z: Part II, especially since it is from Greg McLean. Instead, it's just Radcliffe getting lost and fending for himself while he hallucinates, which is not bad. But it's not exactly amazing either. When the tribal woman arrives it disrupted the flow, and it couldn't regain it until the rescue scene, which was emotional and uplifting. Radcliffe is still a bit of an odd one for me to see perform. His accent is dodgy. Sometimes it is refined, others not. Same with his acting. I found sometimes he really impressed me with how 'into' the role he was, and other times he's awkward. But his body is great for the role. Whether that is his normal physique, who knows, but it suited the character of Yossi. I would have liked there to have been more encounters and danger. And a bit more explanation. What was that he pulled out of his head? What did he eat every day? What skills did he acquire? Because from what I just watched, it didn't seem like anything happened besides walking and walking and walking through the jungle.
