Re: A Taxi Driver
A Taxi Driver is yet another fine film from Korea. Even though I wasn't familiar with the true story behind it, the excellent screenplay and art direction soon carried me back to 1980. A simple Seoul taxi driver who's a widower with a young daughter needs rent money and takes a dangerous long distance fare deep into a violent military crackdown. The passenger is a foreign journalist hoping to document the slaughter of protestors. The taxi driver is played by Kang-ho Song (Snowpiercer, Howling, Thirst, The Host, Lady Vengeance, etc) with just the right touch of naïvete and plenty of humor. His non-meteoric path of political awakening is wonderfully modulated. I wish Hollywood hadn't forgotten how to make great movies like this. *A*
