It feels a bit long and pulls a major punch towards the end, but there's some phenomenal character work here, coupled with what I'd argue are the best CG visuals in the history of the medium. On top of that, Michael Giacchino's score is gorgeous, and elevates certain scenes to greatness.

It isn't as good as DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, but it's still a great conclusion to this story.

Other than being slightly overlong, this is a tremendous film: a technical achievement par excellence with an exciting, involving story and an incredible sense of purpose. It is hard to imagine a more striking conclusion to...let's call it, the passion of Caesar. Bravo to Matt Reeves and Andy Serkis.

I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would, although it did kinda drag in the middle.

Did anyone else think the soldiers in white would turn out to be apes? That would have been a vintage POTA twist ending.

War For the Planet of the Apes has, imo, the best cgi ever put on film. Caesar himself has been a triumph since back in Rise. I think this one finally brought the other apes to his level though. Especially Maurice, the oranguatan. His facial expressions pierce your heart and make all the emotional moments land harder because of it. The first two needed movie stars for these moments, but War is happily unburdened by "good humans."

War for the Planet of the Apes

A very accomplished film. Not as good as Rise but better and more memorable than Dawn. It is too slow at times, but the action and the finale are awesome, and the cinematography sets it apart from other summer blockbuster fare. The visual effects are faultless, and the child apes (and that new older ape) are adorable and funny which is a welcome relief from long stretches of drear. If this truly is the end of this franchise, then it has been a stellar trilogy.

War for the Planet of the Apes is another well made film in this reboot trilogy. Matt Reeves knows his way around shooting a good film (the bird's eye view of troops moving up in the woods at the beginning is great), especially the action scenes are pulse pounding. The film also could have done with more of them actually, the plot moved along a bit slowly otherwise. Especially the scene between Ceaser and the Colonel where I explained his motivations felt dragging. Technically the film is at a high level, the apes look great and the desolated earth is graphically beautiful to look at. The angle of the inner war between humans was an angle that worked well for me. There were also things that I found peculiar like how the girl at was able to get to Ceasar's cage undetected at one point, odd for that being possible in such a highly secured place. The humor of the "bad ape" was unneeded for me too. After a great Rise, these films did make me a lose a bit more interest with every next film, but War is a good closing of the story.

I do question whether this film is truly a war for the planet of the apes. It looks to me that it is a war for the country of the apes. That country being the USA. I am aware that the virus may have spread around the globe, but I do not remember a reference to this, and if it's in an earlier film then it needs to be mentioned again. I guess there is a way to turn the title to mean "it is the war [between humans] for the planet of the apes".

At the end of the first film, just before the end credits, while in an airport, they show in a global map how the virus starts spreading all over the world due to contaminated people traveling.

Also, while I still haven't seen this third entry, this is the way I like when remakes are being made, where they don't follow the original film to a T and bring new ideas into the movie. Neither the 1968 movie and its sequels nor this new trilogy are completely faithful to Pierre Boulle's original story from 1963, but they both take particular ideas and situations from the book and try to integrate new ones or develop them even farther.

That's why I also love 1958s The Fly and Cronenberg's version. Two very different movies based on the same material.

I didn't think this was as good as Dawn and it does feel a little long, but this is still an excellently made and often stirring film which builds to an incredibly emotional and cinematic climax. Andy Serkis maybe delivers the best performance of the three films, and you can really feel the emotional stakes are higher here with this being his final outing. I thought Woody Harrelson was great and menacing. His big monologue was excellently performed. The finale with "Donkey" and the very end was beautiful and tearjerking. Michael Giacchino's score was incredible. And I also loved the little girl. I thought she was great. This is a worthy end to an excellent portion of this franchise and definitely stands above a lot of the forgettable summer blockbusters this year. B+

I think Reeves just wanted it to feel like the a definitive final chapter. Revenge of the Planet of the Apes would have been more fitting, but also seem like its just another sequel.

They were hinting at other intelligent apes being out there and I wish we could have seen them. Again though, Reeves wanted this to be a wrap up and my twist ending with the ape army would demand a fourth film.

War for the Planet of the Apes sets a new world record for least ambitious storyline in a sci-fi movie ever. It puts the ape in The Great Escape (minus the 'great' part, because of the convenient tunnels running under the soft soil of the prison yard). 140 minutes on this pedestrian plot! What a waste of the original source material. *F*

Great stuff. I slightly prefer Dawn over this, but what a great way to end this trilogy. I loved the fact that it felt more like a thriller/suspense film and when the action did happen it was more like sudden, violent outbursts. This is easily the best work from Serkis in the entire franchise and holy shit did Caesar and the majority of the apes look stunning in this, especially Maurice. Woody Harrelson isn't getting enough credit either because I found him pretty fantastic as the villain and I loved every scene he had with Caesar. The only real problems I had with it is that the Steve Zahn ape was definitely unnecessary and seemed to only be there to force in some levity which was a bad choice IMO. Also, while I enjoyed the unconventional approach I wish the actual War was a bit more satisfying considering it was so built up throughout the movie.

Way too long! And 75% of the dialogue is subtitles.

Looking past that, it's less depressing than Dawn. I'm glad the humans caused their own downfall, rather than being enslaved by the apes like Dawn alluded would happen. The score is particularly noticeable considering how silent most of the film is. And there's a few scenes that are just devastating.

I'm not sure I'd want to sit through it again though, and it's not as good as Rise.

Half the fun of a Planet of the Apes movie is seeing apes speak in cultivated English.

It's exhausting to have to concentrate on reading subtitles for 2 and a half hours. Your mind can't wander at all or you get totally fucking list.

If there are subtitles, they are few and far between. I don't recall there being many. Maybe there is. I don't remember too well. Even if there were many, I don't mind subtitles. It's a skill that I am particularly adept at what with being in China and all. You do not really need to read the subtitles to understand the plot though - it's hardly as if they are explaining deep and convoluted plots.

Well I was tired and I wasn't planning to see it in theaters until my friend wanted to go, so I was not exactly in a prime mood for watching this film.

This stays as the best film of 2017 for me and its a shame that it wasn't considered for more awards. Its a perfect ending to this trilogy that maintains a good balance of action, emotions and visuals. Its slightly long but that's a minor complain in comparison to the big payoff we get in the end.

Best of the trilogy IMO.

A+
