A modestly scaled, always interesting comic drama focused on a Jewish American fixer whose life is upended when a minor Israeli politician he previously befriended and groomed becomes an important world leader. The primary attraction here is a dynamic and nuanced performance by Richard Gere; he creates in Norman a character who is equal parts charismatic and infuriating, a schemer whose head is always just above water as he spins ever more complicated webs of big and mostly false promises. There is also an enviable supporting cast—including Hank Azaria, Steve Buscemi, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Michael Sheen, and Dan Stevens—and though none are given a great deal to do, they cumulatively contribute eccentricity, gravitas, and prestige. The film is smartly crafted and capably navigates a sizable tonal shift, from a Woody Allen-esque comedy of manners to a more despondent and probing investigation of why Norman is such an insistent hustler (for a payday? to fill a spiritual void?).
