Quote:
The Fate of the Furious (alternatively known as Fast & Furious 8 and Fast 8, and often stylized as F8) is a 2017 American action film directed by F. Gary Gray and written by Chris Morgan. It is the eighth installment in The Fast and the Furious franchise and stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Kurt Russell, Scott Eastwood, Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren.

The Fate of the Furious marks the first film of the franchise since The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006) not to star Paul Walker, who died in a single-vehicle crash on November 30, 2013, during the filming of Furious 7 (2015).[3]

Plans for an eighth installment were first announced in March 2015 when Diesel appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and disclosed that the film would be set in New York City. Preparations for the film began immediately after the release of Furious 7 with Diesel, Morgan and producer Neal H. Moritz re-signing. After setting an initial release date in the same month, casting took place between April and June 2015. In October 2015, Gray, best known for directing Straight Outta Compton (2015), was announced to direct the film in the place of James Wan, who had directed the previous film. Principal photography began in March 2016 in locations such as Mývatn, Havana, Atlanta, Cleveland, and New York City, continuing the franchise's tradition of filming in different locations around the world.

The film premiered on April 4, 2017 in Berlin and will be released in the United States on April 14, 2017. The film will be released in 3D, IMAX 3D and 4DX internationally.

This has relentless numbing action in the final act and surprisingly comic timings are too far this time aside from exceptional bantering between Johnson and Statham. The first half is too slow as they are building up, the middle act is up and down with some action but the Dom gone rogue act that comes out weak, the final act is just balls-to-wall action scenes. The twist isn't entirely bad but its proceedings and the end result is not very convincing. As always the movie is good when showing action scenes but comes to a screeching halt when it tries to get to any emotional arc. There is another redemption and resurrection of a character in this installment which BTW is wasted entirely but would definitely be useful to the team later, might even join. It delivers a great brainless, bigger, bombastic action but it's surely inferior to previous two installments specially the first half.

6/10

It's brainless popcorn fare but still a lot of fun, and bounces from action sequence to action sequence with exuberant energy. It's a step down from Furious 7 but the running time flies by and it delivers exactly what you'd expect from this franchise. The best part of the movie in my opinion is Jason Statham, who makes a smashing return and delivers on a lot of the comic promise he exhibited in Spy. The finale plane sequence featuring his character is the most inventive and fun moment in the movie, and he has a great chemistry with Dwayne Johnson as well. Their interplay is a highlight. Charlize Theron is vamping it up as the villain but has a good time, and Helen Mirren makes a fun addition to the franchise in an extended cameo. Luke Evans' return I expected but it was still fun seeing him back as well (the other random cameos from previous films did nothing for me). Scott Eastwood is the lone weak link in the cast and I think that his character should be excised from future installments. He's awful and unlikable and the film grounds to a screeching halt when they try to develop his character. This definitely lacks the emotional punch of the previous film and I found some of the VFX a bit shoddy, but it's definitely a fun ride. And Diesel makes a welcome return to form after the godawful shitfest xXx 3 earlier this year. B/B+

For the record, the similarly themed Baby Driver which I saw Monday is a much better film.

It's enjoyable, I liked it more than 7. The action was well done and Jason Statham being part of the crew was a great idea. Kinda bummed Charlize didn't have any fight scenes but
Spoiler: show
... she will probably be back.

I agree with Chippy Tokyo Drift was the most bland and boring movie of the franchise.

The Fate of the Furious is a series of thrilling driving/fighting set pieces in a series of striking locations loosely bound together with a pleasantly soapy espionage plot. If there was truth in advertising it would be titled "Mission: Furious" - which is a good thing for this franchise, since it only survives by going over the top into the ridiculosphere. The cast was fine, each getting some moments to build their character. Charlize Theron was okay as the villain, though the lighting worked against her performance. F&F8 is a solid big budget b-movie. *B+*

Spoiler: show
The next sequel is set in space.

Theron looks pretty good and seems to be having fun with the character but she is a weak villain, ditto for Eastwood. BTW did they explain the existence of Mr. Nobody and why is he aiding the gang ?

I was expecting the worse because the trailers did absolutely nothing for me, but I' be lying if I said I didn't have a blast with this. Not quite as good as 5 or 6, but so much better than 7 IMO. The action sequences while still batshit insane felt weirdly toned down in comparison to the last movie and honestly that's all I wanted because I wasn't a fan of all the over the top, CGI crap in that movie. I loved every scene between The Rock and Statham in this, especially that prison riot sequence and Statham has a pretty dope scene on a plane where he is better utilized than anything he had to do before in the last one. They made him very likeable here and I while I don't know if I completely buy him being cozy with the team it kind of seemed earned in a way. Dom's betrayal was actually handled well and I bought the dark drama that came with it, but Charlize Theron could have been used better even though she's fine in the role. As far as cameos go I had fun seeing Luke Evans come back mostly because I didn't expect it and Helen Mirren was cool, but I hope to see more of her in the future.

Cool film. It takes it's action to further ridiculous heights which please the eye, it seems they don't run out of new stunts and sequences to attempt. It's story development runs more dire though. The Dom turns bad feels as a re-hash of 6 where Letty is part of the opposing team. The film doesn't feel original because of it, but I guess it needn't be. I'm having a blast with the re-recurrence of existing characters and Statham brings a welcome angle to the good guy side, having better chemistry with the Rock than Vin.
I did miss Paul Walker, just for a sense of familiarity only I guess.
Theron is on the one hand good as the villain, but she has her moments where I feel she more so coasts through it. Helen Mirren was having a lot more fun with her part and her character arc with Statham didn't come as a surprise but it was a welcome addition to the film. Having Statham's brother making a small appearance felt like over-kill again too.
The film is highlighted by it's over the top action and lightheartedness, Roman brought enough me plenty of lol's. Story wise it lacked creativity, reducing it's value within it's own universe but when all was said and done, the closing scene still left me with a grinning smile.

Some parts of 8 are better, 7 has a pretty bad last action sequence. But overall, the set-up with Statham as the baddie and the Paul Walker send-off make it a better film for me. Also Statham was a better villain than Theron, despite him popping up conveniently at the scene each time. Basically 7 has a better story.

It's still a good very pleasing franchise, but I also see it going down in rating since 6. I read back some reviews of 6 and that one really finished the film well and built up anticipation with the great after credits scene. And that Vin catching Letty mid-air scene probably remains my favorite stunt of the franchise.

Yeah this shit ain't better than Furious7. Even the action scenes are tamed this time. Not saying that 7 didn't have a long stretch of boring but here in the first half its clear as a day. New characters are all lame but the existing ones aren't great here either. I guess a lot of people haven't seen Furious 7 again which is understandable considering the rewatchability of this franchise.

I don't like this that much better than F7 but I enjoyed this more, I don't see why that's so hard to believe. 4 of us ranked this higher than 7.
