Post Re: T2 Trainspotting
The first Trainspotting is one of my all-time favorite films, with a nearly incalculable impact on my taste in film, literature, and music. So I entered this belated sequel with monumental expectations, and it easily met them. It is an experience as enthralling as it is poignant: an elegy for an Edinburgh of the past inside a tender, even despondent midlife-crisis drama inside an absurd caper comedy, expertly acted by a cast clearly jubilant to reprise their iconic roles and directed with characteristic madcap style by Boyle, deftly utilizing he and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle's repertoire of Dutch angles, otherworldly colors, and kinetic camera movements.

This is also my first or at least most memorable experience of "fan service." Those words are so often found in reviews of, say, Marvel or Star Wars pictures, and I understood the concept without feeling it on a deeper level, but here moments large and small—say, a second-long drop of a record player's needle and the thunderous first note of Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life"—gave me chills as years of nostalgia and affection were acknowledged.

A

The scene where they are forced to improvise a song in the Protestant pub feels instantly classic to me.

This had the same charm as the first movie but it lacks that in almost all departments and the story doesn't justify its existence.

6/10

T2 Trainspotting

Perhaps I expected more, but I was a little deflated by this sequel, and I did not have twenty years of anticipation to live up to. I had a little more than twenty hours. Technically, it's above and beyond what is expected, but the story here is quite weak. Everything wraps itself up rather nicely, and Spud comes out on top (thank God), but apart from the superbly applied music and cinematography, I wasn't blown away. I felt it was just too nostalgic. It should have stopped looking back and revering the 1996 film, and it should have concentrated on making this film a classic in its own right. But I don't want to be too negative because it is still very enjoyable -- just not the great film that I thought it would be with twenty years more experience for Boyle and loads of interesting ideas for what could have been for Renton, Spud, and Sick Boy.

Ewen Bremner is fantastic. He is Spud. Spud is him. I believe he could be 70 and still give a great Spud. The rest are all fine. It's nice to see them all these years later even though for me it is just a day later, but I was disappointed that Kelly Macdonald just gets a 2-minute scene. I mean, she is replaced by the equally gorgeous Anjela Nedyalkova, who I must say is very sexy, but Macdonald was one of the original five poster characters, so it was a gut punch to give her just a small exit scene.
