An unexpected little rom-com with a bit of bite, The Comedian get a little bit too "MyBigFatGreekWedding" at times, but still won me over before long. Leslie Mann and Robert DeNiro make an adorable offbeat couple. It's not perfect, but its perfectly decent. *B*

The Comedian

I get it. It's De Niro back in a King of Comedy-type role, albeit older and the humour is different. But one would expect in a film called The Comedian for it to at least be funny. A few lines worked, and the interaction between Keitel and De Niro was especially intriguing, but overall this is not a very good comedy. Maybe it is the delivery, or maybe it is De Niro. Not sure. But that's the strange thing, I actually enjoyed watching the film. It has an unpredictability to it -- what would happen next? what would he say next? and to whom?

Robert De Niro, Danny Devito, Leslie Mann, Charles Grodin, and Harvey Keitel are all in it, and all are charmingly watchable. It moseyed along delving into areas of Jackie's life; his brother that he never sees and that who has a wife that hates him, his desire for people to forget the character that made him famous, his outspoken/anger issues that repeatedly affect his career, the flip-side where he has seemingly managed to crack the formula for going viral, his relationship with a retirement home owner's fun-loving daughter etc. Now, if only the comedy worked.

C+
