Colonia, also known as The Colony, is a 2015 historical romantic thriller film directed by Oscar-winner Florian Gallenberger, produced by Benjamin Herrmann, written by Torsten Wenzel and Gallenberger, and starring Emma Watson, Daniel Brühl, and Michael Nyqvist. The film is set against the backdrop of the 1973 Chilean military coup and the real "Colonia Dignidad", a notorious cult in the South of Chile, led by German lay preacher Paul Schäfer. The film is an international co-production of companies in Germany, Luxembourg, and France.

Principal photography began on 2 October 2014 in Luxembourg; filming also took place in Germany and Argentina. It was shown in the Special Presentations section of the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival.

Colonia is a well made film about a interesting relic from recent history. The film takes up a very high fictitious character to tell the story about the colony. This is not bad, but a more real telling of the colony would have probably helped for a more intense viewing. It still does a well enough job to give a fascinating look of the events at that time and what Colonia Dignidad was about.

I watched this for Emma Watson a few months ago. It was decent enough but I understand the muted release. I didn't think it delved enough into what it was covering in order for it to be compelling overall. Emma and Daniel Bruhl were solid though. B-

This has some really intense scenes and great acting/chemistry between Emma Watson and Daniel Bruhl but it feels very slight in what is wants to convey for Colonia Dignidad. The cruelty was not explored enough even though the Florian Gallenberger creates some truly edge-of-your-seat thrilling scenes. The middle act was the best part but the final act is played too generically and comes out superficial with the airplane scenes. Daniel Bruhl is great but Emma Watson steals the show.
