So, I finally saw this too last night and like a few others I came away a bit disappointed. Gosling and Stone are absolutely great in it and I also like Chazelle's directorial style, he excels at shooting a scene that puts the actors front and center. The film starts dazzling as well with an upbeat song and the story introduction is pleasing with all kinds of 90's throwback. I was loving the film as Mia and Sebastian get to know each other, but right at the point when it blossoms into something more at the observatory I fail to keep a connection with the story. Overall I also didn't find it to be having a very strong musical selection, couldn't recall any song aside from City of Stars with its catchy tune. And for a film that relies on music that much, it's a flawed element. The story then also goes fast, with them falling in love and getting involved with each of their projects neither which I found that interesting. Their romance was supposed to be enamoring but I wasn't captivated. It surely is a film filled with wonderful moments from Gosling and Stone, but along the whole film I didn't feel like it took me along on the ride. Maybe it's me just not really being into jazz. The alternative reality montage at the end was a great though.

Wow, that's SO not an A- review. Feels more like you think it is a B movie.

I enjoyed it a lot, I'd like to re-watch it too, mostly because I love Gosling and Stone in it, but I didn't love it for those reasons I mentioned too.
I agree that it seems _axiom's B review above is very much similar to mine, I relate to some of the things he says as well. I find it a really good film, and as he says

there isn't. Yet I also don't find the awesometacular film that should get a best picture nom.
I thought about the film a bit more and while Gosling and Stone make the film great, what mainly deflects from that for me is how it the film decides to cut between the 4 seasons and then the 5 year jump. The 5 year jump at that time actually seemed fitting and it allowed for the very lovable montage at the end, but it just feels that with the seasonal cuts, the story wasn't meant to be told within a 2 hour span. So while I really like this film, the what I consider a lack of flow prevented me from enjoying it more. Another film where I experienced this was 300.

Re: La La Land
So you have issues with the very structure of the film, yet still give it an A-. Just be honest and give it a C+.

Well, it's still a very good experience, I'm just pin-pointing there what hurt the story there for me.
After I'll watch it again, I might give new thoughts and revisit the grade.
But it's also true that I don't find the songs in the film that strong.
However the film has excellent moment throughout as well, when Mia is at the dinner and she becomes focused by the music playing from the speaker making her to meet Seb. The dinner conversation right before their break-up. If i'd had to be more specific I'd say the first half of the film is A/A+ and the second half B+/A-.

Why don't you pinpoint why you gave it such a high grade?

I have never seen another single place on the web where I have had to manually erase the "s" from a url to get it to display properly.
1. I wasn't talking to you. 2. You're referring to the youtube function, not a google image. 3. But you know you have to, so you should remember to do it.

Re: La La Land
I adore this movie. Wish it were still in theaters so I could see it on the big screen again. Thankfully I'm sure I'll have that chance again one day. I'm so annoyed by the hatred it has attracted. Obviously that will happen though as it does with anything that's acclaimed and a hit.
