Quote:
Avengers: Age of Ultron is a 2015 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team the Avengers, produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is the sequel to 2012's The Avengers and the eleventh installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film was written and directed by Joss Whedon and features an ensemble cast that includes Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Cobie Smulders, Anthony Mackie, Hayley Atwell, Idris Elba, Stellan Skarsgård, James Spader, and Samuel L. Jackson. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, the Avengers must work together to defeat Ultron, a technological enemy bent on human extinction.

The sequel was announced in May 2012, after the successful release of The Avengers. Whedon, the director of the first film, was brought back on board in August and a release date was set. By April 2013, Whedon had completed a draft of the script, and casting began in June with the re-signing of Downey. Second unit filming began in February 2014 in South Africa with principal photography taking place between March and August 2014. The film was primarily shot at Shepperton Studios in Surrey, with additional footage filmed in Italy, South Korea, Bangladesh, New York, and various locations around England.

Avengers: Age of Ultron premiered in Los Angeles on April 13, 2015, and is scheduled to be released on May 1, 2015, in North America, in 3D and IMAX 3D. Two sequels, Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Avengers: Infinity War Part 2, are scheduled to be released on May 4, 2018, and May 3, 2019, respectively.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Unfortunately it doesn't stimulate beyond its visuals. Some of the comic relief works, but it is unneeded and when it occurs during the action, it interrupts any potential build up of awe, suspense, or excitement. As is to be expected with these Marvel flicks, everything feels very childish; no blood, nothing is seriously threatening, and our heroes are brought down to mere mortals while they play house, lounge around, become drinking buddies, and share needless banter. The action is pretty much non-stop, which is obviously the highlight with this franchise, and there are some cool shots and sequences, but that's all they are; cool, because it all feels rather mediocre for a modern audience not easily wowed. The action isn't very exciting and parts of it are difficult to comprehend (mainly where they had to use body-doubles for Scar Jo and Renner, but the filming was also not perfect).

Ultron was better than the disappointing Marvel villains before him (Robert Redford, Loki, Whiplash etc.), but still wasn't overly impressive. The villain in Age of Ultron is basically just A.I., and I don't think Whedon and co. did a good enough job of making that a tangible and understandable threat. But that I mean 'What is it capable of?', 'Does A.I. ever actually die if it's on the Internet?' etc. Those are just a few questions I had, and I don't feel I should be having those sorts of questions for what is essentially just a brainless superhero movie. The ending is somewhat rushed, but the good thing is that I wasn't bored once during the film. The credits scene featuring Thanos is one of the best scenes in the movie, but these are getting boring now; they just set up yet another destructo-porn superhero clash that, like Age of Ultron, doesn't live up to hype.

Paul Bettany's makeup is seamless. He appears other-worldly, almost Godly as "The Vision". But it's still quite clearly Paul Bettany in makeup. Not sure if I liked that yet. Ruffalo's Banner is more fleshed out, which is a positive, but adding a romance with Nat (since when did Black Widow become "Nat"?) was uncalled for. Quicksilver and his sister were a muted addition to the franchise. Not very exciting, and there accents are inconsistent - Quicksilver in Days of Future Past is much, much, much better. They're not part of the main team, which means that Quicksilver's empathetic death isn't earned (although Olsen is part of the team by the end, and that shot of her at the end is pretty damn nice - she looks so sexy). Hulk does loads of smashing stuff (which is fun), Thor excels in that department too (my soft spot for Hemsworth is growing), and the villain is good enough, I suppose. Chris Evans, Scar Jo, Jeremy Renner, and Sam Jackson are also present, though none of them stand out or impress. The same goes for Robert Downey Jr., but he is noticeable mainly because he doesn't act - he just struts on to set as RDJ. He doesn't seem to give a shit about anything that goes on, and I believe this is beyond the level of "billionaire playboy" with no care in the world that Tony Stark is supposed to be. It just seems like RDJ himself doesn't give a shit. One highlight of the film for Marvel fan boys is that everyone is in this film - even that black winged dude. It felt almost like a reunion.

I did not like it. There were lots of good small moments but overall movie was a chore. Even though there is lots of action I dont think it was that well shot. Even the Hulkbuster scene was the bust. There is little character development for the new characters. Ultron felt 1 dimensional to me. Singer's version of Quick Silver was much better for sure.

Overall would rate it B- in the 2nd tier of Marvel flick. This aint having anywhere close to 1st film's legs as I dont see it connect well with General Audience. I would say most probably sub 2.5x.

MY ranking list of Marvel flicks would be

1) IM1/CA2 - A

3) GOTG - A-

4) IM3 - A-

5) CA1 - A-

6) The Avengers - B+

7) Thor - B

8) AOU - B-

9) Thor 2 - B-

10) IM2 - C-

Mine would be something like:

1. Guardians of the Galaxy B+
2. Captain America: The First Avenger B+
3. The Incredible Hulk B+
4. Iron Man 3 B

5. Avengers: Age of Ultron B-
6. Captain America: The Winter Soldier C+
7. Iron Man C+
8. The Avengers C+

9. Thor: The Dark World D+
10. Iron Man 2 D
11. Thor D

There's really nothing outright terrible about Age of Ultron, it is just nothing spectacular and an accumulation of small to mid-sized annoyances and mediocrities, but it is ever so slightly better than the first movie (mostly because Loki is a shit villain and Ultron isn't as shit). I was not a fan of that one either. I am sure, after a few weeks, I will be lowering Ultron also to a C+. They're just not memorable of films for me. I can take them or leave them, it really doesn't matter. The only ones I actually enjoyed were Iron Man 3, The Incredible Hulk, Guardians of the Galaxy and The First Avenger.

Honestly kind of boring.

You've seen one, you've seen them all.

Fast 7 and Kingman had better action and this movie really doesn't do anything to distinguish itself from the first Avengers either. More faceless robotic minions, more bloodless fighting, more wanton destruction of buildings, more invincible heroes and civilians. Yawn.

I'm not watching the third in the cinema. Marvel has run its race.

It's not THAT bad, Jesus. Iron Man 2 and Thor: The Dark World are fucking D-level crap. This is just underwhelming and mediocre.

Post Re: Avengers: Age of Ultron
VERY sad to say I did not care for this movie!!! Almost all of the magic from the first one is gone and replaced with a bunch of BIZARRE subplots and unanswered questions!

Spoiler: show
I thought Stark quit being Iron Man in Iron Man 3? The fuck? They dont even, like, reference it all unless i missed it ? Ruffalo and ScarJo have ZERO chemistry. That for real could not have felt more forced, it was laughable. Same for the scenes which are supposed to show the avengers bonding (party celebrating capture of ketchman character??). though marvel did finally kill a character, too bad nobody gave a shit. The twins were crap and legit. pointless . Also ultrons grand plan was to lift up the city and crash back into the ground??? is this a fucking joke?

This is a straight up D. The first one was perfect, this movie fucking sucks. In 10 years people will say this movie was terrible. I cant even fathom how the same team behind the awesome original came up with this clusterfuck. Almost nothing works.

How much the stink from this one weighs on future marvel films is going to be a real question.

No idea why either twin is in the movie. The whole thing felt extremely sloppy.

I sort of disagree with that, because on a certain level this is Scarlet Witch's movie. It's about her. She has the arc.

It's just that Whedon has to keep focusing on the action-explosiony bullshit at the expense of really digging into her. Age of Ultron is very much of a piece with Iron Man 2, it's just that Whedon is a good enough storyteller that he is able to manage character development and a storyline with the confines of Marvel's "Yeah, just blow shit up, they'll all come back for the next (more important) movie" mandate.

Eh I don't know. For a while I thought the only point of her being in the movie was
Spoiler: show
to make hulk and huge iron man fight...

Regardless, it's pathetic how cookie cutter and generic this movie became. I feel like all the Marvel issues from previous films are on steroids in this movie...no themes whatsoever, weakly conceived and poorly executed generic drama, no real attempt at any sort of lessons or points or what have you...just nothing. And that is OK if you can rock it like the first film did, but this film tries to cover too many bases.

Iron Man 2 was better than this in my opinion.

Joss Whedon's spirit was all over the movie, but overall it was kinda..... average?

I actually loved it. So much better than the first one overall, but it does have a few bigger weaknesses than the first. Probably not top 3 Marvel films, but at this point, there are so many As and A+ my rankings change all the time depending on my mood. Crowd loved it and cheered and applauded many times (Hulk-IM fight was awesome and RDJ apologizing after punching Hulk like 100 times is just about one of the funniest things ever!)

And you guys are crazy, faceless meaningless aliens vs faceless meaningless robots, it's all the same, but Ultron was spectacular (Not seeing the lack of Ultron comments? Spader kills it! hands down the best Marvel villain so far, Loki Shmoki!)

I actually enjoyed it probably give a B+. I thought Ultron was a good villain, although it probably needed another film to develop his character. I do agree that Singer's Quicksilver was better. However, I liked the Scarlet Witch and thought Vision was great.

Vision seemed to built up to be the must-have solution, then all he really did was fly around. There was so much going on and so many powerful characters, I just kept getting caught up with the little questions like why was Ultron so focused on destroying the Avengers from within instead of just directly killing them all at once? Also, why can't Ultron be just sitting on some non-moving random hard drive on the other side of the world?

The main characters were enjoyable to watch as always, but the movie suffers from being unable to change or develop them.

Other random thoughts:
-I liked the idea of the movie starting mid-battle, but in execution, it removed any kind of built-up excitement in the subsequent battles when seeing the Avengers all together.
-So many side characters! While it was neat getting to see them all, none of them got to do anything particularly interesting.

B-

My ranks:
1. Guardians of the Galaxy - A
2. Thor - A-
3. Iron Man - A-
4. The Avengers - A-
5. Captain America: The Winter Soldier - B+
6. Captain America: The First Avenger - B+
7. Iron Man 3 - B+
8. The Incredible Hulk - B
9. Avengers: Age of Ultron - B-
10. Thor: The Dark World - B-
11. Iron Man 2 - B-

I am surprised I liked it so much. I loved a lot of it. My expectations were lowered quite a bit when reviews started pouring in and the opinions of it here. Did we see the same movie? Cause this was so much damn fun. And Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor Johnson and James Spader were all great.
