 Pocahontas Pocahontas Quote: Pocahontas is the 33rd animated feature in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series. It was produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and was originally released to selected theaters on June 16, 1995 by Walt Disney Pictures. It belongs to the era known as the Disney Renaissance that began in 1989 and ended in 1999.
The film is the first animated feature Disney film to be based on a real historic character, based on the known history and also the folklore and legend that surround the Native American woman Pocahontas, and features a fictionalized account of her encounter with Englishman John Smith and the settlers that arrived from the Virginia Company.
A video game based on the film was released across various platforms shortly after the film's theatrical release, and the film itself was followed by a direct-to-video sequel, Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World in 1998.

This movie is really underrated. I loved it and it brings back fond memories of my childhood. I plan on buying the new DVD tomorrow.

The beginning of the end of the Disney renaissance. It was a nice try, but it never got to the level of the four that preceded it. The music was disappointing as well. The only really memorable song was Colors of the Wind.

Right above The Hunchback as far as I am concerned.
Now Mulan and Lilo and Stitch on the other hand are wonderful.

Re: Pocahontas I absolutely cannot fathom why this is rotten on rottentomatoes.com. I can see how someone could be a bit offended by the historical inaccuracies, but that does not make this film any less beautiful, poignant, or heartfelt. I for one could not care less about the historical changes made for the film. The only one that can really be certain is incorrect is that Pocahontas was nowhere near John Smith's age. Favorite part of the film has to be the beautiful score. Every song here hits its mark, from the Pocahontas ballads Just Around the Riverbend and Colors of the Wind, to the group numbers Steady as the Beating Drum, Savages, and Mine Mine Mine all being stupendous. This is my third favorite Disney score behind Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. The plot is also good, it is not quite a take on Romeo and Juliet, but it achieves the same emotional beats.The characters are also good, from Ratcliffe to Grandmother Willow. I just cannot understand how this is a bad movie. Not perfect, but really bad?

Re: Pocahontas This movie mainly suffers in the characterization department. The leads while nicely animated have personalities as dull as dirt. Neither Pocahontas or John Smith have any flaws or humor about them. They’re just attractively animated leads in a Disney movie. The animation is great as is the music, and the story has potential, but it definitely could have used more fleshing out. The villain is ok, has personality at least but he’s not very threatening.

Re: Pocahontas After watching this for the first time I finally get Avatar's comparisons to this movie yet this movie is not great specially because the characters are not given enough development and the love story is not believable. The end though is great and the music (specially the score) is brilliant. The finale is very rushed as well.

Re: Pocahontas At just 81 minutes, it's a lean cut. The songs are not memorable but the animation is lovely. It has a serene and natural beauty to the New World, and the story is contained, sweet, and worthwhile. Mel Gibson and Billy Connolly are the recognizable voices, and they do well. It's also nice and funny with Meeko, Flit, and Percy providing ample laughs. It's a bit overbearing in terms of song - I wanted less of them and more dialogue and plot, but it's hard to deny the visuals are beautiful when they are singing.

Re: Pocahontas I slightly take it back re: the songs. My son has the film on right now and "Listen With Your Heart" is lovely, catchy, and memorable.
