Ain't Them Bodies Saints is a 2013 American independent drama film written and directed by David Lowery. It's a tale of an outlaw who escapes from prison and sets out across the Texas hills to reunite with his wife and the daughter he has never met. Post Re: Ain't Them Bodies Saints
This is an earnest and spot-on evocation of the American cinema of the late sixties and seventies, the era of enormous clouds, far-as-the-eye-can-see golden fields, winding roads, sweat covered brows, dreams in crisis, and limited, but always significant explosions of violence exemplified by Badlands, Easy Rider, and Vanishing Point. A mythic and romantic tone is set by the aged opening title card: "This was in Texas." In what I presume is the 1970s, Bob (Casey Affleck) and Ruth (Rooney Mara) are childhood sweethearts who commit a crime which goes awry. After a chase and a shootout in which a youthful deputy (Ben Foster) is wounded, Bob is sent to jail, and the pregnant Ruth, claiming Bob forced her to participate against her will, tries to move on. A few years later, Bob escapes from the big house and begins a dangerous journey home, one toward Ruth, his daughter, and their destiny. The trio of lead performances are subtle and tender, with Mara in particular further cementing herself as a major up-and-coming talent, and the film's ambling, sparse, magic-hour atmosphere, however studied, is persuasive and potent.

It's all very average. There are some moments to grab on to whereas some just really drag. Although I really like both of the main actors, they're just alright here as well. At least the film went with the ending it should have.

I cannot really be bothered to "review" it, but it's a very well-crafted film. One of those festival films that are really good but don't get noticed at the Oscars or Globes. Casey Affleck has carved out a career in starring in this type of film. The score and the way it plays over dramatic scenes is beautiful.
