Well, Mandrain is actually a REALLY lame villain.

All he does is drain stuff. Ya'know?

Seriously, though, why do the villains in the Avengers-universe suck?! The only one that is pretty damn good is Loki, but not even so much in Thor as in The Avengers. Still, the strongest Avengers-villain is still weaker than any of the main TDK-villains (Two-Face, Joker, Bane, Scarecrow, Ra's al-Ghul). The villains matter so much for the quality of comic book adaptations, especially once the origins have been told.

Well, Mandrain isn't a lame villain. They just made him lame in the movie.

I didn't mean the comics, I meant the movies so far.

I thought this one was (by default) the most narratively interesting film of the three, even if it is basically adapting the neurotic template of Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang with Marvel characters. Even though the film is more tonally unstable than the other movies in its universe, I appreciate that some risks were taken with the source material. And as unpopular as the main twist seems to be going over with audiences, I dug it. The climax of the movie was really impressive even though, as someone mentioned earlier, the bad guy not dying after getting caught in the suit reminded me of Looney Tunes.

I have to agree with Magnus and excel about the movie. The whole fake Mandarin was a slap in the face to the comic books. Its like making Joker a mime hired out as an actor and the mastermind behind him looks like your office accountant in Philly or Washington. Killian was extremely bland although I love most of Guy Pearce's work.

I don't think anybody disagrees with this statement, but some of us don't care that it's a slap in the face to the comics.

Because you don't understand bait and switch from the trailers by playing up the whole invisibility of the Mandarin.

Killian was the Mandarin. So all they really did was change his nationality from Chinese to British to Australian. Not that much of a slap in the face. I was hoping to see an epic showdown between Kingsley and Downey like everybody else. I do wish Killian had better motivations than the usual revenge and insanity, and that Extremis was powered by technology stolen from the Chitauri.

2. Thor - A
3. Iron Man - A
4. The Incredible Hulk - A

Post Re: Iron Man 3
After even the second Jon Favreau directed Iron Man film felt tired, for Iron Man 3 a new director is wisely pegged in Shane Black for his first film since the excellent Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang.

Iron Man 3 is an improvement over the stale second Iron Man, but falls short of greatness. The film is filled to the brink with action sequences and a non-stop, fast plot. The action is largely well filmed and clean. However the sequences are a little familiar, nothing new to either the Iron Man franchise or Marvel’s other superhero films. They are watchable but hardly exhilarating or new. Considering how the film is dominated by action, they are not enough to carry the film to great status on its own.

Furthermore in search of a “pure fun” blockbuster, Tony Stark making growth over the film largely takes a backseat. The film’s plot needs Iron Man far more than Tony Stark, even if he hardly wears the suit in this one.

A bigger problem is Guy Pearce’s villain. While his backstory as a suicidal nerd had the potential of a more complex villain, by the time the present day shows up his one-note evil personality makes him flat and dull. Rebecca Hall’s more morally ambiguous character is more interesting but underused.

Aside from Ben Kingsley’s scene stealing, Iron Man 3 is also not as funny or witty as it thinks it is. Downey, Jr. is as charismatic as ever, but he is hardly throwing punchlines. Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper has her weakest film and is mostly a bystander, a sharp fall from the first film when Pepper provided so much wit and energy. If the first Iron Man’s wit felt fresh, the third can’t escape feeling calculated and aiming to capitalize on that early success. A superhero Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang this is not in its script.

Iron Man 3 is a perfectly fine and entertaining blockbuster film, but as in other Marvel films like Thor or The Avengers, the how-to manual for a summer superhero film is followed at such an evident level that it’s hard to be bowled over, especially with two Iron Man films before this. It is as expected.

Post Re: Iron Man 3
I'm not really a huge Iron Man fan. I loved the first one, found the second one really boring and found The Avengers fun, but nothing special. This one ranks right between Iron Man 2 and The Avengers for me. I was actually loving it for the first 45 minutes or so. The set up was great and I was totally invested. The scene where Stark's house is attacked was seriously great. After that, it turned into a fucking mess. It was serious garbage and ultimately pointless and boring. I couldn't wait for this thing to be over. I agree that it was seriously marketed poorly because I was expecting something darker and this was seriously the lightest of any of the three flicks. That wouldn't be a problem if it was a good movie, but it just wasn't. The humor didn't work 85% of the time and was pretty bland and I hated that fucking kid. I didn't hate the movie, it was just seriously mediocre and will honestly probably end up being the worst of the big May movies.

6/10

It's a bummer, for sure. But I'm not a comic geek, so I don't care.

Shane Black certainly likes Christmas and shipping yards doesn't he? When Stark and Rhodes were just beginning to infiltrate the shipping yard with their guns drawn, you can't help but recall Lethal Weapon 2. I was half expecting Rhodes or Stark to say they were "too old for this shit.". If he had actually killed off Pepper Pots then it would've been very similar to Lethal Weapon.

Anyways, the film is fun. It doesn't have an ounce of depth to it (outside of the fantastic Mandarin twist), but it's damn good popcorn entertainment, with two fantastic action set pieces, and another effortless performance from RDJ.
