Oh, come on. Thegun's remark came out of the blue, but Norton is an awesome actor.

About the movie - it's certainly solid, but by no means the best of the franchise (and certainly not the best action movie of the year). The big set pieces - Moscow, Dubai, Mumbai - are undoubtedly impressive, but everything in between just feels shallow and perfunctory. Which some might say is a trademark of the series, but at least the first and third ones had a complex, interesting plot; this barely has a forward narrative. The opening, in particular, just feels cheap and dated, especially with those awful CGI credits. The cast is fine - Renner and Pegg inject some much-needed levity, Patton is hot, and Cruise is Cruise - but definitely not comparable to the Trek reboot. And the ending was terrible - corny and sappy and sentimental, which is basically the antithesis of everything Mission: Impossible is supposed to be.

Frankly, the film's just not that great.

Honestly, I didn't even remember there WAS a third one before this came out.

Actually, it’s way better than the first three, all of which were varying degrees of bad. This isn’t. This is good. Not because of the script, which is bland and perfunctory and probably technically a remake of one of the James Bond movies, but because Brad Bird is apparently a masterful director of action set pieces. The clarity of motion and the tension he achieves are basically unparalleled in recent action film history.

And this movie understands (which I’m sure the inevitable fivequel will forget) that this needs to be about a team. As a character, Ethan Hunt makes Prince Charming look three-dimensional. It’s a shitty franchise until now largely because, through no fault of Cruises, the character just isn’t there. He’s likable, Cruise works his butt off, but Hunt is totally indistinct. And it's true in this one too. But this time he has three enormously ingratiating performers with him, and they don’t get shoved into the background come the big climax. If Mission: Impossible 5 brings Patton and Pegg and Renner back, I’m in. If it doesn’t, I’ll have to be dragged in kicking and screaming again.

I honestly preferred the team and Hunt associates in the third. Ving Rhames, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Maggie Q, Simon Pegg, Keri Russell, Laurence Fishburne. Good chemistry.

Not sure why people love Renner and Patton so much.

And when III came out, so many people were discussing and praising its use of a team dynamic after the Hunt-as-Bond-esque-lone-wolf-superhero vibe of the John Woo picture. Now Ghost Protocol's use of a team is being praised as an INSPIRED choice, a refreshing change of pace for this once-flagging franchise, etc.

Mission Impossible 3 began with a team dynamic, but it became a Hunt vs. the world thing by the end. Not so this time.

Still wish it had a script to match the quality of the set pieces, but i'm pleasantly surprised anyway.

I thought the music was pretty disappointing, actually. It was serviceable but I expect better from Giacchino. It felt like he was afraid to indulge in the original theme, which he shouldn't have been. It's a strong, iconic piece of music, and its underrepresented in the score.

I agree, Pegg was probably better but Renner and Patton were pretty interchangeable, except less qualified than Q, Rhames, and Meyers. This film is less about about teammates, but more about proving yourself.

I still think the original team was amazingly qualified. Estevez was hilarious, Kristin Scott Thomas was sexy and capable, Voight had so much presence, and the rest of the team was flawless. While I love the original film for just crushing almost all relation to the series and pissing off fans, its a nice what if if they made a movie like the 3rd or 4th with that team it could be ridiculous. They were a seasoned team in the first, why did they even change the team for this one. This team was good enough that I hope they finally stick with one.

So not one comment about the obvious fun that Cruise and Renner had with their gay "rumors". Many one liners and exchanges. Wouldn't surprise me if these two got it on plenty while filming.

I remember Jeremy Renner saying "Next time, I seduce the rich guy" after narrowly escaping the big computer. That's all I got.

I was able to roll with the goofiness--I mean, its a globe-trotting spy movie--until that final stunt with the car. That was too much, and it ruined the climax.
