The Artist

Quote:
The Artist is a 2011 French romance film directed by Michel Hazanavicius, starring Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo. The story takes place in Hollywood between 1927 and 1931 and focuses on a declining male film star and a rising actress, as silent cinema grows out of fashion and is replaced by the talkies. The film is itself a silent film and in black-and-white. Dujardin won the Best Actor Award at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, where the film premiered.

This film is so beautiful and a joy to watch from start to finish. Jean Dujardin deserves at least an Oscar nomination for his work and the beauty that is Bérénice Bejo deserves some Academy recognition as well. The two of them work so well together and they both have their moments to shine. The film actually had a lot more comedic moments then I thought but also has some really tragic ones mixed in. Hopefully this film spurs up more silent black & white films because it really was a nice trip back to older film. James Cromwell and John Goodman also have strong supporting roles here. Plus, the dog had to be the best dog in a movie in a very long time. I loved every minute he was on screen. We'll see how The Descendants and War Horse play out, but out of the supposed Best Picture frontrunners at the moment, The Artist is one damn good film that would deserve the award. ****

Something I forgot to mention: the use of Bernard Herrmann's Love Theme from Vertigo in the third act is terribly out-of-place and totally took me out of the movie. I just kept thinking of the Hitchcock, which really doesn't fit with this film. A 1950s tale of obsessive love referenced in a homage to 1930s Hollywood romance? It doesn't work.

Was Malcolm McDowell cut out of this movie or what? What a strange, tiny role. Was it a reference (he's playing "the Butler") I missed?

This was so good. Effortlessly charming and full of style and, like Hugo, dripping with love for the movies in every reel. Michel Hazanavicius really has a lot to be proud of with this film: it's a very simple story and a very simple film, but that doesn't stop it being from excellent. Jean Dujardin has the Errol Flynn-ish looks down pat and is completely charming, while Bérénice Bejo is delightful and believable as someone who would have been a star in that era (although her placement in Supporting Actress is borderline category fraud, this is a lead performance). Both Dujardin and Bejo perfectly display the more elaborate acting styles of the time period with their performances here. Also: that dog - so freaking cute! And the score by Ludovic Bource should certainly be highlighted. The Artist does a lot with music and sound (perhaps not surprising for a silent film), and the zippy score is quite memorable. A

I see this as Jean Dujardin's movie. His character absolutely dominates the movie, and we only experience the other characters through his experiences. Bérénice Bejo has a big role, but it still feels supporting.

It's entertaining. :P Which is enough. It doesn't need to be complex. There is room in theatres for stylish popcorn fun.

I don't have a problem with stylish popcorn fun. This is not it.

Although I do believe people are overstating the movie's passion for cinema. It's just a sweet romantic comedy filtered through classic Hollywood iconography. Nothing deeper (doesn't need to be). But there seems to be this odd impulse to project depth and complexity on to this film's relationship with cinema, as if to justify simply being won over by the romance and whimsy.

Don't enjoy it, though, lest you be deemed a simpleton.
