I didn't even realize that, you're right - that "death" is an clear set up for Red Skull/Weaving to tag team villain with Loki in the Avengers, though he's not on the IMDB page so maybe not. Maybe he's supposed to be the villain for Avengers 2 or Captain America 2

Post Re: Captain America: The First Avenger
I don't think the film earned its climax or even its supposedly tragic romance, but it's still the best of the Avengers pictures and probably the best superhero movie this year (it's close between it and X-Men - though I had pretty much the same problems with both).

That said, the opening hour or so is so great and flows so smoothly that it's a real drag it segues into that awful montage of the Cap'n and his team wiping out Hydra bases (complete with way too much slo mo). From there the films rolls downhill, climaxing in a pretty lame final showdown and a borderline awful ending. I agree with TDS, the film should've ended on the kid holding the shield, but it's still not a great ending. Again, I don't think the film really builds up enough to justify where it ends, and thus most of the characters get borderline shafted. I didn't really buy the romance (did Peggy only fall in love because of Steve's rockin' bod?) and thus the ending didn't really affect me. Steve Rogers fell asleep for 70 years? So what? We've got The Avengers to get to!

But I really dug the retro stylings of the opening, and Evans is pretty good for what he's asked to do. Tucci and Jones are both as terrific as expected, but unfortunately Hugo Weaving isn't as evil as he should've been (though I did enjoy how much he sounded like Werner Herzog). It's a pretty fun flick, though not one as deep or meaningful as it wants to be.

I'd prefer a direct sequel instead of The Avengers, too, though only one set in the same era. I'm sick of contemporary superhero films. Gimme some period shit.

The film establishes that before the operation, Peggy felt some connection to Steve. She's drawn to his courage and bravery. She shows emotion when the operation appears to go wrong.

Sure, him getting a rocking body certainly help fuel her feelings towards him, but she didn't go from completely not interested to suddenly interested.

Agreed, this is how I saw it too.

There was a brief connection, but if Steve had stayed small and weak and non-heroic, no way Peggy would've fallen in love with him.

Worse than 'Green Lantern'. 2/10.

There is not a single interesting thing about this film. It is just dull.

Post Re: Captain America: The First Avenger
8/10 -> B

Let me start off by saying that I loved the look and the feel of the movie and I'm already terribly disappointed that the sequel will be set in the modern ages. The quasi-historic setting gave Captain America a different flavor and charm that distinguished the movie from other comic book adaptations (which are starting to look a lot like each other) from the get-go. It's a shame all that will be lost.

But for now let us enjoy what Captain America really is. A fun, unique comic book adaptation offereing in today's Hollywood.

Chris Evans slips into the role of Captain America with ease. Joe Johnston knows how to do action well (better than horrible Favreau and only suffice-able Branagh), even though the idea behind action scenes are slightly too standard.

I must say that I looked forward to CA the most out of all comic book movies, and while it didn't disappoint there was definitely room for improvement.

This film looks like a joke next to The Winter Soldier, though the events on this film are clue on the sequel

In my opinion, this is the one "Marvel Cinematic Universe" film which can comfortably stand alone as an entertainment, as a piece of (commercial) art, unto itself. The only one worth revisiting. It has a beautiful aesthetic and a wonderful character arc for Steve/Captain America and is just a rousing WWII-era adventure film. It would be a nice double feature with the first Hellboy.

TFA is more self-contained, but that doesn't make it a better film.

This is not untrue, CA1 was delightful but definitely lacked a top-notch action setpiece

This film is probably the weakest from Phase 1, IMO. It has a great setup and villain, but it loses steam in the end.
