Re: Good Neighbours
Essentially a pitch-black comedy, it's got a terrific sense of style, suspense, and space (both geographical and temporal) and some fantastically off-beat performances at its centre. Jay Baruchel doesn't deviate from his normally anxious, annoying self, but Scott Speedman is surprisingly terrific as a wheelchair-bound tenant with a nasty streak behind his creepily winning smile. Of course, I loved the Montréal setting (as well as its placement during the dark post-referendum winter of '95), and the ending is sufficiently hilarious and terrifying.
Proof that Canada is still churning out great films, even if nobody sees them.
