Basically a western set in modern times in the Australian outback and with an Aborigine replacing an Indian. It shares some similarities in plot to Once Upon A Time In The West, although in a much smaller scope and not so intricate.

Actors are OK (most are unknowns to me) and the action / suspense scenes are well handled for the small budget the movie had.

Good entertainment to pass two hours, but nothing ground breaking.

I'd give it a solid B. It has GREAT atmosphere. The dusty small town, the beautiful, yet foreboding natural landscapes, the big storm rolling in...it just nails the feel any modern, noir-infused western should have.

It does strain credulity a bit too much at times, though. One of those movies where characters alternate between amazing shooting skills and awful ones depending on what the screenplay requires, and where no one but the principal characters seem to live in the small town. And it has one hell of a jump-the-shark scene...or should I say jump the panther?

Overall, though, I enjoyed it. It moves at a nice clip and, as I said before, has a great "feel." And Ryan Kwanten (True Blood) is decent enough in the lead role.

For the most part I really liked this, though it reminded me a bit too much of NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN at times. I liked Kwanten in the lead, and it's impressively made for not being a big budget movie. I'd recommend it.

Red Hill

Glad I've finally seen this. Four years before The Expendables 3, a film in which he was out of his depth but took the big money Hollywood pay-day, Patrick Hughes wrote, produced, edited, and directed this part-western, part-exploitation thriller, and it's by far the best thing he's done. He wears as many hats as Robert Rodriguez, and also had help from Greg McLean (Wolf Creek), but you can tell this was a passion project of his and he probably laboured over this idea for years before bringing it to fruition. I loved it. Off the top of my head I cannot think of a better Australian film besides Mad Max II: Road Warrior.
