Post Re: Ella Enchanted
Hokieness hasn't looked this good in a long, long time - - Ella Enchanted is an anachronistic charmer that manages to sustain just the right note of maverick spirit within a tale on the meaning of obedience (surely an under-examined theme these days). I'm pretty sure this is one of those movies that you either are lucky enough to fall for immediately, or that you are sadly eternally alienated by - - well, I for one sure fell for Ella Enchanted's funky fairy tale vibe.

The actors lead by the vibrant and ultra-charming Anne Hathaway are clearly enjoying their ride on this wonky fantasy roller coaster (though Parminder Nagra (Bend It Like Beckham) and Jimi Mistry (The Guru) are criminally under-utilized). There are heaps of other great supporting actors too, from Hugh Dancy, Cary Elwes, Joanna Lumley, Minnie Driver, and then Steve Coogan and Eric Idle in voice roles. Plus it had a cool nostalgic spin in it's good-natured spoofing of it's predecessors in the fantasy film genre and a great retro soundtrack peaking with Ella's showstopping performance of the Queen song Find Me Somebody To Love in the Giant bar - - that is one of my favorite musical performances on film of the the 2000's!

Ella Enchanted is just too darn charming. Not only that but it threw in some surprisingly relevant political commentary, too! Anne Hathaway was note perfect in the role of Ella of Frell. This is a smart, witty, and very funny movie. I am officially in love with Ella!

Easily one of the top ten films of 2004.

55 out of 5.

I can't follow up on Bradley's review, he pretty much nailed it.

Ella Enchanted is easily one of the most underrated films of 2004.

8/10
