Horrible movie. Batman as interpreted by Cirque Du Soleil.

No depth, are you kidding me. The film is filled with emotional depth. Not Batman film will ever come close to saying as much as this one did. This was an arthouse Batman film, with great acting, superb direction, and very good action along the way
A+

The best Batman movie so far, the wonderful characters and setting easily compensate a quite weak plot. It is also the more original of the serie, but that's quite obvious considering the director.
B+ or 8.5/10

Amazing. A stylish and sexy Batman film with fantastic characters and a great story. Devito, Pffifer and Keaton are all great even though Batman is overshadowed by the supporting characters.

A That's a big plus for me. I hate when a film focuses all it's attention on a single character. Especially films that have villians. It's one of the reasons I rank Batman Begins below Batman and Batman Returns.

Re: Batman Returns
the second best one (after Begins) to date. Very unusual for a superhero movie, and unlike the first one, it isn't INCREDIBLY outdated (but it still is outdated).

Re: Batman Returns
I would have liked it better if we'd gotten a deeper Batman story. There was plenty of the Penguin/Catwoman/Max Schreck plot going on, but Bruce Wayne/Batman was in the background for pretty much the entire movie. The lack of an actual Batman story here and the mostly successful (in my opinion, at least) telling of one in Forever probably indicates why I (ever so slightly) prefer that sequel over this one.
But nevertheless, Michelle Pfeiffer is absolutely incredible in this movie. If Nolan and company decide to incorporate Catwoman in one of the future movies, I really feel bad for whichever actress has to live up to what Pfeiffer did here. Danny DeVito and Christopher Walken are also delightfully weird in their roles.
All-in-all, it's a good movie with some really good ideas, but it's overwhelmed by Burton's macabre tone (honestly, as a whole, I prefer his whimsical work to his depressing work) and a story that puts too much of the focus in the direction of the villains and not nearly enough in that of the title character.
Rating: 3 stars out of 4, B

I like that Burton focused on villains. I don't care about Batsy at all - he is soooo boring. But the villains were truly deep, fascinating and yet unexplored personalities.

A fantastic, underrated near-masterpiece that complements well with the original while exploring its own world.

Among the greatest films ever made, easily the best bat flick, Burton rocks hard.

Eh, it's definitely a step-down from a pretty great Batman. I liked its look and Pfeiffer's Catwoman is pretty great, but the villains just suck here. Penguin never seems threatening in any way. The penguings carrying missles on their backs just look hilarious and Chris Walken fails to impress as well. Nicholson's Joker easily owns them all. It's a dark and gothic film with some great style, a couple of nice action sequences and a col finale, but overall it could and should have been better.

Re: Batman Returns
Well, it looks a lot better than the original. Burton's sets, the action sequences, the gadget. The difference really feels as big as T1 to T2, IMO. The flipside of that though, is that it loses a bit of the dark, seedy feel of Gotham in the original, and it just feels more Burton-esque than real. Gotham in the first actually felt like a real city. This, I don't know.
With that being said, I think it's an improvement. Bruce and Selina is probably the most interesting romance in a major superhero film, with Pfieffer really nailing Catwoman, and Devito manages to be as creepy and disgusting as asked. Walken is Walken in a wacked up wig and eyebrows, but he's an improvment over the Vicky Vale, Knox, Dent characters that populated the real people in Batman 89. And the action sequences are better.
Bruce again doesn't get as much screentime as the villains, but they did a pretty good job getting into his duality dilemma and his want for someone like Catwoman beside him, so it worked. And thegun is right, the 3 villains kind of represent the different sides of Bruce. Millionaire, freak, and the lonely man hiding behind a mask.
I think it's the best Batman movie to date.
4.5/5

Probably not a very faithful adaptation, but this might be the best representation of Burton's style. Pfeiffer is definitely best in show.

Re: Batman Returns
Yeah, I think I like this better than Begins as well. The Batman/Catwoman romance is probably the best character relationship in any of the Batman films.

Re: Batman Returns
Wow! Excellent! So much better than the original! Burton was allowed to go Darker and be more creative and it pays off in spades. I absolutely love Danny Devito's the Penguin and Michelle Pfeiffer is great too, even though I prefer Anne Hathaway. She makes a much better love interest than Vicki Vale. Michael Keaton is still not in the movie enough. I'm sure he has less screen time than either of the villains. But it's just so entertaining.
