The Ten Commandments (1956)
The Ten CommandmentsQuote: The Ten Commandments is a 1956 American epic film that dramatized the biblical story of Exodus, in which the Hebrew-born Moses, an adopted Egyptian prince, becomes the deliverer of the Hebrew slaves. The film, released by Paramount Pictures in VistaVision on October 5, 1956, was directed by Cecil B. DeMille and starred Charlton Heston in the lead role. Co-stars included Yul Brynner as his adoptive brother, Pharaoh Rameses II, Anne Baxter as Nefretiri, Edward G. Robinson as Dathan, Yvonne De Carlo as Sephora, Debra Paget as Lilia, John Derek as Joshua, Sir Cedric Hardwicke as Pharaoh Seti I, Vincent Price as Baka, and John Carradine as Aaron.
This was the last film that DeMille directed. He was set to direct his own remake of The Buccaneer, but his final illness forced him to relinquish the directing chores to his son-in-law, actor Anthony Quinn. DeMille had also planned to film the life of Lord Baden Powell, the founder of the Scout movement, with David Niven; this project was never realized. The Ten Commandments is partially a remake of DeMille's 1923 silent film. Some of the cast and crew of the 1956 version worked on the original. It has since been remade again as a television miniseries broadcast in April 2006.
The Ten Commandments is one of the most financially successful films ever made, grossing over $65 million at the US box office. Adjusting for inflation, this makes it the fifth highest-grossing movie domestically, with an adjusted total of $977 million in 2010. In 1999, The Ten Commandments was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". In June 2008, AFI revealed its "Ten Top Ten"—the best ten films in ten American film genres—after polling over 1,500 people from the creative community. The Ten Commandments was listed as the 10th best film in the epic genre.

Re: The Ten Commandments [1956]
I've been lucky enough to see The Ten Commandments three times on the big screen in various re-releases - - it's the best of the biblical epics, even edging out the almost as fantastic Ben Hur. The Bible's fractured fairy tales were always meant for this type of outsized kitschy telling. The cornucopia of old school Hollywood actors is a miracle in itself as they chew up the desert scenery. I love this film for the same reasons I loved the recently released 10,000 B.C.. It is ancient "history" with verve!
(Currently awaiting a grading upon next viewing.)

Re: The Ten Commandments [1956]
um the film has some slow boring parts especially in the middle.
However the film delivers the great scenes from the story really really well.
The sea scene and the scene where he talks to God to get the commandments is good.
B+...

Re: The Ten Commandments [1956]
I love when god's big scary voice shouts all the commandments down and then Moses yells that people who can't live by the laws will die by them.
Commit adultery=death Rape=meh
Anyway, as for the movie. Ugh. Once was more than enough. The 220min runtime was completely unnesessary.
I guess they feared if anything was cut god would KILL THEM ALL!!!!!!!
Or it would bomb, or something.

I think God's voice was a combination of 4 voices including Heston's voice...

It's getting a little old people being so snobbish on these boards about religion...it doesn't even make you sound smart anymore seeing that anytime it comes up in any conversation everyone jumps in at once with their little witty comments.

That the worlds problems are all religion's fault. It's not an age thing, it's an increased awareness of history among people of all ages and a break from religion's monopoly on thought control - - religion is indeed the root of all evil.

Comments arent witty at all though. Just the same ol miserable blabbering. Regardless, I saw the film a number of times when i was younger and have always enjoyed it. Alot of great one liners in it too. Great special effects for its time (parting the waters, plagues, creation of 10 commandments, etc). And Yul Bryner!

Re: The Ten Commandments [1956]
I dislike Heston's method of acting, however the movie has some really great one liners.

Re: The Ten Commandments [1956]
I don't really find epics like this to be religiously-driven; at least, not in the same way that something like "The Passion of the Christ" is. These were secular, big budget films that added extraneous (and usually melodramatic) Hollywood plot formulas to the Biblical account for the sake audience appeal.
They also, by and large, sucked. But they are good camp!

The Prince of Egypt is WAY better. Way too long, added so much unnecessary stuff.
