Re: Lars and the Real Girl
I thought it's pretty funny. It's also sweet and heartwarming. On the paper, one would have been sure this is gonna turn out to be some melodrama, emotional over the top. But fortunately, it didn't. The performance is superb too. Loved it, loved it!

LARS AND THE REAL GIRL
Finally saw this today on netflix. I really enjoyed it. It was weird and quirky. At first I thought it pretty unbelievable that a town would actually entertain this man and his delusion but then I thought a small town might do it to help him in a way. Anyway, it was pretty good and funny. Gosling really got into this role with Lar's mannerisms and the interaction with Bianca.

Re: Lars and the Real Girl
Yeah this is very, very good. Maybe the only problem I had with the film is near the film's end where we begin to see Lars change at the bowling alley but then he is pulled back into his imaginary world again. The last scene though makes up for that mistake mostly. Gosling is obviously great but, like others have said, Mortimer and Schneider are just as fantastic.

Re: Lars and the Real Girl
How the hell was Gosling skipped by the Academy for this in favor of Johnny Depp's hollow performance in Sweeney Todd?

Lars and the Real Girl
It is a hilarious but also poignant and quirky study on mental illness. Lars, played by Ryan Gosling, is coping with loss in his own unique way by ordering a "real doll". The entire town seems to embrace her for the sake of Lars' psychological treatment. But it's when an ambulance is called and they actually take it to hospital that it goes too far, in my opinion. I do not believe medical services would be as understanding wasting time going out for a doll when they would have been best served waiting for real emergencies. And Gosling gives a good performance, but (especially in the first half) it just really feels as if he is smirking (along with the audience) at the ludicrousness of what's happening. I feel he is great for the role in some regards but really bad in others. I'll give him a pass because I like him, but I've never thought he was a GREAT actor. He is simply too cool to give himself over to roles like this, although overall he does give a fine performance (by the end I couldn't picture anyone else as Lars). Final note: a charming film.
