Quote:
Peeping Tom is a 1960 British psychological thriller directed by Michael Powell and written by the World War II cryptographer and polymath Leo Marks. The title derives from the slang expression 'peeping Tom' describing a voyeur. The film revolves around a serial killer who murders women while using a portable movie camera to record their dying expressions of terror.

Its controversial subject and the extremely harsh reception by critics effectively destroyed Powell's career as a director in the United Kingdom. However, it attracted a cult following, and in later years, it has been re-evaluated and is now considered a masterpiece.

What would frighten me to death? Set the mood for me, Mark.
Imagine... someone coming towards you... who wants to kill you... regardless of the consequences.
A madman?
Yes. But he knows it - and you don't.

They call this the British Psycho. Both were released around the same time, and both deal with simliar charecters. However, I feel this movie is better than Psycho in every way.

From the opening shot to the end, the film thrills you. It's suspsneful, yet it has those comedic moments in-between that makes it entertaining. And the main charecter is VERY disturbing, yet somehow you manage to connect with him. And the cinematrophy...brilliant.

All I have to say is camera + knife + mirror = greatest murder weapons ever. Great classic film that deservse more praise I feel.

You're incredibly overrated and and if they made a Pixar film about you it would gross less than The Good Dinosaur.

The film that killed Michael Powell's career. It's great, if not quite up to the level of his legendary collaborations with Emeric Pressberger.

It's also far more accessible than its legacy would indicate.

The similarities with Psycho were my biggest take aways from Peeping Tom. Watching it 58 years after its initial release made its controversial themes and imagery almost a non-factor, so I had a relatively clear mind to concentrate on the film's plot and performances. I have to say, I wasn't too enamoured with it. Though I always appreciate watching British films from a nostalgic and documentative perspective, I was glad when it ended. Carl Boehm was probably the wrong choice to play Mark. He's clearly not British, despite apparently having lived in that house for his entire life. He nailed a certain Norman Bates reclusive weirdness, but actually I thought he verged on the bad rather than the intentional. The score was probably the best thing about the film.
