Quote:
Red Dawn is a 1984 American war film directed by John Milius and co-written by Milius and Kevin Reynolds. It stars Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey, Lea Thompson, C. Thomas Howell and Charlie Sheen.

The film is set in an alternate 1980s in which the United States is invaded by the Soviet Union and its Latin American allies (specifically Cuba and Nicaragua). However, the onset of World War III is merely in the background and not fully elaborated. The story follows a group of American high school students who resist the occupation with guerrilla warfare, calling themselves Wolverines, after their high school mascot.

A high implausible but strangely enjoyable 80s relic. The idea of a bunch of school kids being able to bring the fight to crack Soviet and Central American forces is pretty laughable, and the whole nutso right wing agenda doesn't even try to hide behind any sort of smokescreen. Strangely I do find the film very enjoyable because of this, indeed the whole absurd nature of many 80s popcorn movies often makes them better then their modern counterparts and this film is a definite case in point.

WOLVERINES!!!!

The movie is like the 80s of whos who of acting with Patrick Swayze, C Thomas Howell, Charlie Sheen, Lea Thompson and Jennifer Grey.If you look back at the movie it looks like it clearly was written by a hardcore conservative who really thinks a USSR takeover would happen in the US. Other than that if you look beyond the hidden message, its a pretty entertaining movie unintentially funny but action packed nevertheless.

Fun idea, suitably cheesey acting, and incredibly low production values -- all add up to a great B-movie!

Perfect for an evening when you wanna forget about terrorism and global warming, and get all nostalgic for an old school boogeyman...

Great 80's flick. C Thomas Howell is fun in this film.

Solid 80's film. It's got a young and upcoming cast that shines and its interesting concept is pretty well drawn out. The action is a bit weak, especially compared to cinema nowadays, and while it tries hard for it, it doesn't have a great emotional punch either. But there's plenty of drama to go around and the story transitions well from peaceful high school life, to invasion and successful resistance. There's other nice touches too, with it's mountainous scenery, score and good characters on both sides. Well made.

I voted B.

If you watch it in all seriousness, for its plot, actor playing and message, then it will get something like a C.
It's a solid A, however, when watched with friends, beer and junk food.
Bonus points if you watch it with gun or airsoft enthusiast friends and take sides and engage in banter battles in the middle of the movie.

Haha, films that spawn debates are the best ones.

This really is an 80's film, would it be made the same way in the current climate I wouldn't expect to like it as much. And well, they made a modern remake of this, which would put it immediately to the test, and I'm tempted to check it out also, its poor reception have not helped with that though.
