That's my opinion. Just because a film is a collection of bizarre images with no connection doesn't make it a "masterpiece". I watched it two years ago, re-watched it recently and my opinion hasn't changed., and I doubt it ever will. I don't know what you guys see in it.

Time to crack open the book.

Comments like these possibly directed to those who actually liked the film bugs me. So can I call the majority of people who hated Freddy Got Fingered brainwashed sheep for going with the trend? :pinch:

I didn't mean it like that. What I meant is that I'm not going to give it a good grade just because everyone else does.

There really isn't much to add to the discussion here that better educated users haven't. Though I must second makeshift's comment about how this can almost become a religious experience. It seriously might be the single most ambitious movie ever made, and that it reaches almost everything it aims for is awe-inspiring. Fucking brilliant.

Pretty spectacular in just about every way. The direction is flawless, the visuals are utterly breathtaking, and it's incredibly engrossing and thought-provoking. I also agree with what was said about this being one of Kubrick's creepier efforts. Many sequences definitely gave me the chills, which I wasn't expecting initially. Not a whole lot else to say, but if you haven't seen this yet you are definitely missing out. A

I was having an argument with my friends (and by that I mean the one other kid who goes to my school and has seen 2001) that the Hal storyline was all about humanity getting past machines. The monolith gave the use of tools to earliest man because he needed them to evolve into man in the later acts. But the only way to evolve to the higher level of the star child was to disavow that gift. Man has to destroy machine (and it is done quite literally) to reach his next step, just like man needed machine to get to his current step. Watching it right now on TCM I feel stronger about that opinion.

What was your friend arguing?

Because that's totally right.

errr...so I have something to admit. I've been waiting to see this in a theater since I moved to new york. it's only shown up in a repertoire program once. I paid $30 for a ticket. and missed it. and have had no other opportunities to see it. it's awful.

so...do I give in and just watch it lo-tech, or do I keep on waiting in my noble pursuit?

So you've never seen it, period?

That's probably enough to exclude your membership from the snob club.

I've probably seen 90% of it in bits, but never together.

I have only a computer at school.
but, I may have a savior in my family if they get their new wide-ass widescreen before I make it back home in two weeks. otherwise, it's a computer. a laptop, no less.

You should probably wait to see it in theatres, then.

He was arguing it was just Kubrick's way of pandering to his audience; that he needed to have this as almost a breather before he put in the mind-bending ending. I thought it rather insulting to Kubrick.

That's pretty disgusting.

Pandering is the last word I'd use to describe Kubrick.

Anyone who has ever accused Kubrick of "pandering" needs to have their eyes removed from their skull so they can no longer talk about movies they've seen.

Kubrick pandering? I think we found a new realm of snobbery.

There's some form in his films! Kill him!

Its highly blasphemous but I actually enjoy 2001 seconds more. Not to say this isn't a great movie, but insertions of odd music alternatives are impossible for me to resist!

I think 2001 is a helluva lot more enjoyable. Clockwork Orange is just a brutal, brutal experience. Not so for 2001.

To be fair, it sounds like he's only seen 2001 and, perhaps, home videos of Kubrick peeping on the Lolita next door.

No need to attack you - - if anything, we surely offer our support and condolences for the unfortunate effect this film had on you compared to the enormous blessing it has been for so many of us...
