Quote:
Driving Miss Daisy is a 1989 American comedy-drama film adapted from the Alfred Uhry play of the same title. The film was directed by Bruce Beresford with Morgan Freeman reprising Hoke's role and Jessica Tandy playing Miss Daisy. The story defines Daisy and her point of view through a network of relationships and emotions by focusing on her home life, synagogue, friends, family, fears, and concerns. Hoke is rarely seen out of Miss Daisy's presence, although the title implies that the story is told from his perspective. Driving Miss Daisy won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Now here's a film I pushed off watching for a very long time, thinking I'd hate it. Did this film deserve the Best Picture, I'd say its dam close and is equal to Dead Poets Society or Born on the Fourth of July. It was a very charming film, that had a great blend of humor and drama with great acting throughout. Freeman was superb and Tandy deservedly won the oscar, very good performance. I was really surprised with Dan Akyroyd though, he was well casted. My only complaint is that the passage of time was a little confusing at times for me, but other than that, it was a good movie. The last PG film to ever win Best Picture

I love this movie. Really didn't think I'd like at all. But after I decided to watch On Golden Pond after I heard so much about it from my dad, ended up loving it. So I decided I'd watch Driving Miss Daisy as well. And I also loved it. Dad has good taste sometimes, when he isn't watching Fantastic Four on HBO every other day! Or whatever channel it plays on all the time.

I'm so thrilled this won Best Picture and that Tandy was recognized for her peformance. She brought me close to tears on a couple occasions. Freeman is great in what would become a string of amazing performances. I loved the screenplay and the comedy throughout.

I'm not a big fan. And that ending is so depressing.

I found myself agreeing with Chris on several occasions lately and this is another of them. The movie is great and I love the fact that it won Best Picture. It's one of my favorite BP winners in recent memory. It's just such a simple, yet touching, moving and engaging flick.

What carries it first and foremost is the acting. Tandy and Freeman are both brilliant. I've always thought that while a great actor, Freeman seems to be playing the same mentor role over and over (and he ended up winning an Oscar for one too). Now here, it's different and I'd call it his best performance I've seen to date (and that includes Shawshank, Se7en and Million Dollar Baby). He character feels very natural and his interplay with Tandy is just flawless. Now speaking of Tandy, she's an equal to Freeman in this, delivering a top notch performance that deserves all of its accolades. Their two performances on their own would already be great, but the interplay between them that results from their great chemistry is what makes the film such a gem.

Now there's nothing really outstanding about the direction (which wasn't even nominated for an Oscar), nor is the screenplay groundbreaking (albeit very good, of course). It's just a simple story of predjudices, friendship, getting older and yet still discovering oneself. It has some scenes that I felt weren't needed and it did get a bit too sentimental on an occasion or two, but all in all, it was a very satisfying experience and while very sad, I thought the ending was quite fitting and natural. This seems to be a Best Picture winner, rather unseen by the masses here and I firmly recommend to everyone here to change that. Go out and get this flick! :)

Driving Miss Daisy

This is a delightful film. I chuckled all the way through. Hoke is such a lovely man, and Miss Daisy is, in her own way, such a nice person but beset by independence and pride (reminded me of my late, great, lovely gran). Anyway, it chronicles with subtlety twenty-five years from the 1940s to the 70s, and it is satisfying to witness their bond grow and the barriers be dismantled as the years progress. I am a bit surprised it won Best Picture (though it is by far the best out of the nominees). It's a nice little film but Morgan Freeman is a better actor here than the film is the best of the year, and unfortunately he lost to Daniel Day-Lewis (not seen My Left Foot yet). Anyway, that's all done and dusted now.

My gran loved Driving Miss Daisy, and always had a rental box version of it on her video shelf. I could have watched it 20 years ago. But never did. Anyway, it is a good film and I'm pleased to have finally seen it.

Something I noticed was the score. It reminded me so much of the score from Kindergarten Cop or Twins. I cannot quite put my finger on it. It is a lovely score regardless.
