Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Monty Python and the Holy GrailQuote: Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a 1975 British comedy film written and performed by the comedy group Monty Python (Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin), and directed by Gilliam and Jones. It was conceived during the gap between the third and fourth seasons of their popular BBC television series Monty Python's Flying Circus.
In contrast to the group's first film, And Now for Something Completely Different, a compilation of sketches from the first two television series, Holy Grail was composed of new material, therefore considered the first "proper" film by the group. It generally parodies the legend of King Arthur's quest to find the Holy Grail. The film was a success on its initial release, and Idle used the film as the inspiration for the 2005 Tony Award-winning musical Spamalot.
The film was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation in 1976, but lost to A Boy and His Dog.

There are better comedy movies overall but this is certainly the funniest film I've ever seen. Really silly, just the way I like it, and its better than the other Python films. A-

I'll edit this with a full review in time, but for now:
No film has ever made me laugh this much, if i'm feeling down i just put this film on. It may seem cliched now, but in its day this (along with the other python movies) they were fantastically original. So many classic lines, so much fun. The best Monty Python film by far. A+ (one of only ten films i have ever given that grade)

One of the funniest movies. Ever. No argument. Period. Anyone who thinks otherwise can go watch Benchwarmers.

Dunno what I was thinking there, hehe. For the longest time I had a negative feeling of the film. Seen it since then and loved it, it is one of the funniest ever, period. Coconut opening and black night scene are nearly enough.

The Bridge of Death just might be one of the funniest scenes ever.

Near perfect comedy, probably my number two of all time after Airplane.
While I'll admit the ending is stupid and totally kills the mood of the film, at the same time how brilliant is that, there is no resolution. It's Pure Python at its best and the movie's style of comedy will never be duplicated.
My favorite part will always be when the two guards continously watch the scene of Lancelot running from afar, then he appears from no where screaming "Ha Ha" and continues to stab everyone in sight.

Endlessly quotable, it really does keep getting better with age. I think my favourite part has to be the Knights who say NII!

Re: Monty Python And The Holy Grail
It's really hilarious and eternally quotable, but the ending kills it. It's just way too out there and not funny at all. It's too bad, as it ruins what was, up to that point, one of the best comedies ever. The witch burning, all the swallow nonsense, the killer rabbit, the giant Trojan bunny, the animations: all are classic comic scenes. The combination of dry British sarcasm and wacky improvisation is brilliant. But that ending, argh! I can see its appeal, but it just annoyed and frustrated me. Still, one of the funniest movies ever made.

Re: Monty Python And The Holy Grail
this film is funny but to some it may seem really stupid... we played it in class one year and there were 14 people... 5 people found it funny, 3 couldn't stop laughing, 2 were confused, 4 were sleeping... Man this film is just so funny, the Bridge scene and the Killer rabbit!!!!!!!!!!1

Re: Monty Python And The Holy Grail
2nd best comedy of all time, only trailing Airplane slightly. The Pythons were completely original and their style will never be matched. Apart from its ending that is at one point brilliant/ one point terrible its a film that is hard to beat.

Re: Monty Python and the Holy Grail
I really don’t get the hype for this film. Maybe it’s of a time and place, but all the jokes consist of the actors just saying random things. The only funny scene was the black knight. The rest was literally so aimless and had no point. I don’t see why them being so stupid is funny. I must be missing something.

Re: Monty Python and the Holy Grail
There is nothing stupid about them. Hands down one if not the smartest, wittiest comedy group of all time.Add in perfect timing, fantastic impressions and physical comedy. They're not many others you could make a case for being funnier.

Re: Monty Python and the Holy Grail
I must have missed something.
I didn’t get why them pretending to have horses was funny. I didn’t understand why them going on about swallows was funny. Or why all the nuns wanted to have sex with The one guy. Or why it was funny that the one guy wanted a shrub. Or why the two guards couldn’t understand the command to not let the guy leave. Or why it was funny for the one group of nights to say ni and other nonsense syllables.
The only scene I laughed at was where the night kept fighting as he lost his limbs.
Really every joke was just random. If someone asks me what I want to eat and I say “a manatee” it’s not funny just because it’s random and weird it’s just stupid.
It’s like how the office isn’t funny just because the characters say weird things into the camera and wait for you to laugh as they make a face.

Re: Monty Python and the Holy Grail
The answer to all of those questions? Because it’s an absurd comedy. I think it also depends on your mileage of medieval movies, or really any epic movie. But it all boils down to absurdist comedy, and the last thing anyone should do is explain comedy because it’s not like anyone is going to change your mind.
Python is overrated, but you can’t deny Grail or Brian, especially Brian.
I’d also say give The Office more than one episode.

Re: Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Someone explained the horse joke to me and now I get it, it had to do with budget or something.
I don’t think it’s a bad film but I didn’t understand why parts of it were supposed to be funny.
