Re: Detention Kinda like a cheaper, edgier Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, this is a hyperactive fusion of genre that flirts with brilliance. The film is overflowing with a potpourri of visual gags and pop-culture references, for better and worse. One could accuse the stylistic flourishes and narrative tangents as being director Joseph Kahn's desperation to impress the audience. But the tone is so emblematic of the ADHD generation that it almost feels... Genuine.

Re: Detention I thought this was a lot of fun. Though not as great, I agree with the Scott Pilgrim comparison. If you enjoyed that I'd say this is worth a look.

Aliens? Check.
Teen comedy? Check.
Teen slasher? Check.
Current pop-culture mocking? Check.
Past pop-culture mocking? Check.
All of these things are contained within this film. Mostly it makes no sense. It was like the director set about making a collection of music videos and tried to tie them together with an over-arching plot. Except the plot is boring and the conceit does not work. Or maybe he was attempting to make a film and tie the plot together with somewhat related music videos?

It is kind of like if Clueless met The Fly met Back to the Future met Friday the Thirteenth met some dumbed-down Bret Easton Ellis commentary on the 90s (instead of 80s) meets the Breakfast Club.
