Empire is saying 11m for IO2 thursday. I think that is going for high 50s 3rd weekend. Quiet Place can win this getting to 60m this weekend. Walkups were absolutely terrific today and I expect the same over the weekend.

Seems good for a A Quiet Place and finishes off the June rebound. I wonder how big the second movie would've been without covid since it seems like the Nyongo prequel version should be less popular than the mothership.

Rough ballpark, AQP2 would have likely done a $80M/$225M type thing in regular times. A Freddy's type $80M from fall 2023 feels about right as that was getting a lot of buzz.

Still, $160,072,261 in May 2021 was pretty awesome looking back.

Yeah I remember being shocked the 2nd opened that high. This doing $50m+ is really great imo.

Lupita quietly now has had some massive OWs where she's been a key star (also not including her work in SW). BP1, BP2, Us and AQP:D1 with 4 $60M+ OWs in 6 years.

Even if it's the franchise property itself which is the star she's got a good agent / keen eye on her projects. She's so under the radar elsewhere so interesting to see her essentially headline such big titles in horror even if they are riding on Peele/John as directors for much of that box office pull.

Can one ever really headline a film if their name isn't on par with the title?

Lupita is more of a hard-working caption.

It still doesn't quite feel right calling her the reason for Us and A Quiet Place Day One success with her as lead, but it's impressive enough none the less and she should get more lead roles until she starts flopping.

It's basically the same as saying Kenny Baker was the reason Star Wars was a sensation.

Lupita is an incredible actress, no one else could've pulled off 'Us' the way she did. Obviously the movie sold based on the Jordan Peele name, but she is known and respected and it was her performance that was front and centre of both the marketing and the film itself was entirely carried on her shoulders. She may not be a 'draw' like Sandra Bullock but that project was a huge win for her. Not fair to compare it to Star Wars IMO. A lesser actress would've made the film come across worse and no doubt hurt its performance. It was Lupita's face alone on the poster and her basically alone doing all the promo. The film's effectiveness hinged entirely on whether the lead actress could pull off the double role and look convincing in the marketing. The selling point of the marketing was her face and her creepy voice, they asked her about it in every interview, it became a meme, etc. I think it was a combo of the Peele coming out after Get Out, like a black M Night Shyamalan after Signs, but coupled with a note perfect performance from exactly the right actress. It's harder to disentangle her acting from the success of the movie than it is with a clear cut franchise pic.

A Quiet Place prequel is more like a Star Wars situation where you could've replaced her with any competent actress and the box office result probably would've been the same.

Deadline is saying 60m for IO2 and 48.5m for AQP. But those projections look off to me. Anyway its early to get friday numbers. Let us see where things are in couple of hours when Empire and Charlie will update.

Empire/Charlie are saying 23m Friday including previews for AQP. it should have a good OW for sure.

22.5m for AQP and 17.1m for IO2. its going to be close for the weekend winner as I expected.

4.1m for Horizon. May be just cross double digits. I am not certain its going to make anything significant OS and so it has to make money outside box office. 2nd movie also would open similar I think.

Deduct the Thursday revenue of $6.8m and AQP:DO's Friday was $15.7m. Considering IO2 is a kids movie and will likely increase on Saturday, I see no way the new release takes the weekend crown.

Pretty impressive Quiet Place managed the best OD of the franchise.

Looks like all the smaller holdovers won't make much now due to losing theaters.

A whopping but not surprising 47% of Horizon's Friday gross was 55+ and 31% were Paramount+ subscribers (an interesting exit audience stat DHD had). So maybe Sunday will be good for it. The July 4th weekend also seems like a time maybe it can get a good second weekend hold.

Also, not surprise Latinos/Hispanics are saving the box office again with 32% of the audience for AQP and Caucasians 33%.

3 massive overperformances in a row but the moviegoing block seems to be a force and has driven 3 $50M+ OW's in just 4 weeks now.
