I don't quite get it but DWA has a very random animated sequel strategy.

They used to be notorious for milking their sequels for all it's worth (4 Shrek movies over 10 years, 3 Madagascar's, etc.).

Then we had to wait 8 years for a Kung Fu Panda sequel.
11 years for a Puss In Boots sequel.
7 years for a Crood sequel.
19 years for a Spirit sequel.

They still have Dragon, Trolls, Boss Baby but seems out of character from their old ways.

44% drop for Dune. Low 30s for KFP.

Here is the Kung Fu Panda series adjusted for inflation:

KFP1 (2008): $93,326,983 / $333,767,442
KFP2 (2011): $67,059,497 / $232,529,983
KFP3 (2016): $52,070,650 / $181,038,245

It's been 8 years but the lack of family competition can maybe help it pull off a $150M total which would be a big win. I think it only needs to pull off $23M to reach $100M as it has Easter coming up and limited competition.

KFP4 to me looks like a $30m opener.

However, with the lack of kids films and seemingly good tracking - $50m+ should be the target. It just wont get there by virtue of it being a tired franchise. $40m looks upper end for me.

I heard movie is trash. But there is a deal for Xfinity(Comcast) internet customers who can get 2 tickets for free to buy via Fandango. They have 30 million customers. Even if just 10% use them, its going to make some difference. I am bumping my prediction to 40m based on that.

Good call. That will make a difference. $40m seems where it is heading.

DHD is predicting $50M+ for KFP4.

I don't want to get too excited but the family movie vacuum leaves this as a big coin toss. Also hadn't realized that Spring Break is next week for a lot of universities and colleges. Friday and Sunday could be inflated for it as it gets students who grew up on the Kung Fu Panda movies when they were younger as well as family audiences.

I wouldn't be shocked by under $30M. But I also wouldn't be shocked by over $50M. With weekdays next week school holidays, could get an impressive 10 day total.

What's happening with Imaginary? Looked like an easy hit on paper for the Five Nights crowd but instead it kinda feels like it is being dumped? Wish I had realized that before going $28M in the game. Will be lucky to hit half of that.

Wonder what Imaginary would've done if it was the January horror...

Reviews aren’t terrible for Kung Fu Panda but basically it’s a standard kids flick that’s easily worse than the first 3 movies.

Charlie posted at BOT that while adding Canada BO to domestic, they dont convert. They just add Canadian dollars as US Dollars !!! Basically 1 CAD = 1 USD. This is the most shocking info I have heard about BO and I thought I knew it all following BO for 3 decades.

That seems crazy. At the same time, I feel like in Canada they have to pay more anyway so I could see if a ticket was $10 avg in the US wouldn't be shocked if it was $12 in Canada. So maybe they do it to make it easier for reporting box office figures but for tax they'd have to report their revenue in CAD I'd expect? I definitely feel per capita though our box office evens out.

Also @Keyser any data on Cabrini and how it could do this weekend?

I'm seeing a lot of mentions (from 5 days ago) on the Xfinity forum of people not being able to redeem the promotion due to the limited supply. It feels like they could have had even higher admissions this weekend. Will be interesting to know just how many tickets Universal capped at but we may never know. Interest seems to have far outpaced supply.

I think it would have done much better. Even February would have been a good time to release it.
