$3.4m. Meh.

A little less than half of Black Adam.

With more family appeal 35m is a reasonable target but still a disappointment

Think it's safe to say these movies are done unless it can somehow gross $300m+ WW. A superhero film should not open below $40m, especially when the first opened over $50m.

Looking for a cheesy line to use here to express box office disappointment. Alternate suggestions are welcomed...

Looks like they SHAZAM-ed to the wrong beat here.

It definitely feels like WB deliberately gave up on this after a certain point, probably when they realized it was not as good as the original and that this DCEU was getting a reset anyway. This and Aquaman 2 feel like they're getting treated like summer burnoff episodes of a cancelled show. Flash will probably get more attention just because of it being a reset point and the Michael Keaton of it all. Still, pretty embarrassing for them to be going 0/3 on 2023 releases so far when the other studios have been thriving. Hopefully they put their all into marketing Evil Dead Rise since reviews and early reaction have been so strong.

WB needs to pay $50M each to the 3 stars of Harry Potter NOW for a 2 film deal.

HBO Max really fucked WB lol. No thanks to them at least theaters are thriving.

WB should at least have a good summer. The Flash and Barbie should do well even if they have no money to heavily advertise.

This is almost a self sabotage. They barely marketed the movie and kept reviews out till last minute. Its almost like they want to get rid of Levi and so ensuring this flops big time. Their wish has come true.

Just saw an ad and it reveals a pretty major cameo that would have been a big surprise in the theaters. Like... it feels like a late attempt to say "Look who's also in the movie! Go see it!" but ugh. Would have been cool going in blind and being surprised by their appearance considering, I think, we won't see them again.

Image

Just look at that image. How bad does that look? Just get out of that "superheroes are cool" headpsace for a second. That looks cheesy and embarrassing, like how Steel and Blankman looked in the 90s.

Creed 3 now over 2 and has more weeks of business to come. Great result.

Decent hold for Scream. About matched the hold of the 5th.

Still looks like 115m+

11.7m for Shazam. Pathetic number. Sad cause 2 isn't even bad and is by default the best superhero movie of the year so far lol. Probably not gonna pass 80m domestic.

If Paramount gets its shit together with D&D, there's a pretty decent chance Shazam 2 ends up being only the fifth highest grossing new release this month...bananas.

Highlights of the Friday #'s for me

-65 dropped 65% from last Friday. Has that ever happened before in box office history in a non-studio manipulated way like MGM would do with 007 box office grosses?
-Puss went up 20%! It's PTA for Friday its 87th day was still under just a 70% drop from its opening day PTA. Will be at $183M by the end of the weekend but with Mario coming only 3 weekends left until its 9th life is gone.
-Strangeness of seeing Ant Man do a 70% and 60% weekend drop weekend 2 and 3 and now possibly seeing a drop in the high 20s.
-Creed III could become the biggest unadjusted film of the franchise by the end of the weekend and still probably has another $40M left in it. Could see $170M which is crazy good.
-Expected WB spin on how this is a good result on Sunday for Shazam in the face of tough competition. :funny:

Curious how Shazam would've done in Christmas. Maybe it could've opened tiny and had holiday legs to... a simiar gross lol

I think the film would've done ok in like August. RIP.

It's sad that it shifted to March to get IMAX since Avatar had a lock on them in Dec. So without them and premium screens Shazam could very well have missed $10M opening day.

D&D was done a huge favor here but this is also helping clear the way further for Mario and JW to clean up as all other holdovers will probably be under $10M by then (though Creed could leg it out).

Would’ve done better in December IMO. Would’ve gotten a lot more curiosity tickets since there are a lot of people who like to go to the movies on Christmas who had already seen/didn’t want to see Avatar

Ant Man can close over 220m with this hold.

It would need 231m to not be the least leggy film in the MCU. Probably not gonna happen but it will at least be out of the Morbius, BvS, Catwoman, Electra, Datk Phoenix category

If the movie had a stronger audience reaction it probably couldhave done pretty well at Christmas as counter-programming, but the B+ Cinemascore indicates that audiences aren't that enthused by the movie. Movie was probably doomed no matter where it opened.

Shazam looks like only big movie flop for this month. Creed and Scream broke out big and John Wick and even Dungeons and Dragons look very good to me to open > 70m for JW4 and 40m for D&D.

Ant-Man and Shazam are both money-losing flops. The public is finally saying NO to superhero movies.

$30.5m for Shazam. Mediocre legs get it to $75m... ouch. Really doesn't deserve to do Morbius numbers jesus
