Mortal Kombat has an early estimate of $11M Friday so DS is not likely get to #1 this weekend. But the yearly #1 is what matters!

True!! And just the reception of DS in the US is amazing already. Glad for both genres and for the box office as a whole.

DS definitely doing more than $8m on Friday (including previews)... So far DS is ahead of MK, but this could still change...

Demon Slayer having a bigger opening day than Broly, and the biggest opening day for an anime film (and foreign film?) since the second Pokémon film from 2000, while playing in 1,000+ fewer locations, will be pretty bonkers.

Indeed this is comparatively a HUGE opening for DS specially with handicap of limited seats.

My predictions for remainder of weekend: low end 10 mil to get to 19.5 mil. High end 15 mil to get to 24.5 mil.

Re: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (INTL - US Release This W
Assuming the U.S. comes in at ~$20 million this weekend, then we're looking at a worldwide weekend around $25 million (maybe slightly higher, $26/27 million) or so? Haven't seen any numbers from Mexico, or from Central and Latin America, but it posted #1 debuts in several of their markets.
The U.S. result alone will be enough to earn it the #1 worldwide film of 2020 crown after Sunday though. Such a huge accomplishment. And $500 million+ has become more likely than not now as well. And this is, of course, with no assistance from China (who look a bit silly banning it now).

Do we consider Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon a foreign film? (It wouldn't matter anyhow since it didn't get a wide release its first weekend and only grossed a lot due to its long legs)

A non-English language film, for sure. A non-American, I don't think so. I suspect a few British films might have achieved the feat ( Lawrence of Arabia to give just one example + some of the Bond movies). wasn't The Longest Day the highest on 1962? https://m.the-numbers.com/market/1962/top-grossing-movies i wonder if there's a such specific list somewhere .i'll have to look it up

I'm still mad we'll never know how much China may have added.

People in countries where theaters are closed are angrier due to no HQ leak version from China My wild guess that the move would have made $100 million at least if it had been released in mainland China.

Re: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (INTL - US Release This W
I agree Jiffy! It could reach $800M total gross if it got release in China Keeping my fingers crossed this weekend Domestic Box Office for MK is $9,030,000 ( https://m.the-numbers.com/movie/Mortal-Kombat-(2021)#tab=international) While DS Domestic Box office is $9,500,000 ( https://m.the-numbers.com/movie/Kimetsu ... 2020-Japan)#tab=box-office) But of course DS had a Thursday night preview and it's still looking like MK will be on top.

Saturday growth is good 20%. I guess we can expect a great $35-40M closing.

Thenumbers has Thursday at $3.8M, so that would mean Saturday increased over Friday.
