Sonic the Hedgehog: Breaker of Chains?
Is this the end of the video game movie curse? Or just a blip like the first Tomb Raider?Which got a lot of like-minded movies greenlit, but all those movies would eventually flop or be handed off to Uwe Boll and then flop.
Personally I think without the redesign, this movie's opening weekend is under the $21M it made on opening day. We will see what happens with Mario next year (right?), and then Crash,Donkey Kong and all the other animals that we love to jump on things with.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog: Breaker of Chains?
Something that Sonic has that a lot of video game characters don't is his long history in animation and comics. That means a fandom outside the usual gamer crowd and a blueprint on how to write for him.

Don't think Sonic's breakout means much for video game movies

Yeah, its more in the realm of successes like Garfield, Scooby Doo, Smurfs, and Chipmunks.
Good and bad video game movies will continue to varying successes.
Sonic also has the technology on its side that was widely successful with Quicksilver. The Flash will probably end up being a few years too late to look that fresh.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog: Breaker of Chains?
I think we're focusing on the wrong things. This was less a video game success than it was a family film success IMO. There was nothing for families other than Dolittle which despite horrible reviews may get to a 4 multiplier. Just shows how open the market was.

Some good points here. Flava'd vs The World wrote: Is this the end of the video game movie curse? Or just a blip like the first Tomb Raider?Which got a lot of like-minded movies greenlit, but all those movies would eventually flop or be handed off to Uwe Boll and then flop.

A studio listening to fans in this case. mark66 wrote: The power of blue...
AVATAR, THE SMURFS, SONIC... Also the power of Jim Carrey's praised performance. Shack wrote: Banjo Kazooie (voiced by Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy) with Adam Sandler Honestly though, this would be brilliant. Also if they're able to get the Kazoo Kid to at least cameo in the film, I'm there opening day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRpdIrq7RboO wrote: I think we're focusing on the wrong things. What you said, the studio listening to fans and doing the redesign, and Jim Carrey's performance all played a role.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog: Breaker of Chains?
I don't know how much Jim Carrey being in this helped Sonic's opening. It's not like his performance was praised for months in advance for the audience to latch onto. Having him might have helped a bit but it's definitely not a huge factor for this opening.

Good trailer although it feels like Jim Carrey is forced into this

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog: Breaker of Chains?
I think Uncharted will do "good for covid" numbers. Like $35M/$90M? And the casting announcement for Super Mario Bros definitely generated buzz.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog: Breaker of Chains?
Could see this improve on the original by virtue of not having its legs cut short by theater closure. Original probably could’ve done 450m Ww and 180-190m domestic if theaters hadn’t closed.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog: Breaker of Chains?
Still a little crazy that for all of eternity, Sonic will be a top 3 film for the year box office wise (though really only 2.5 months of real box office).

I'm thinking Sonic 2 really will be huge with a 70m OW or more.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog: Breaker of Chains?
If Sing could do $160M with omicron I think Sonic could make a serious run for $200M+ if its not absolutely horrible. Even if its horrible though will still do big since its first out of the gate.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog: Breaker of Chains?
Mmm idk I kinda feel this might get overpredicted. Has there been a film like Sonic that had a sequel that did way better? I think an opening in the 50s would be great.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog: Breaker of Chains?
Mainly lack of competition, the really good marketing and the fact many caught the first film on streaming due to its theatrical run being cut short by the first theater shutdown is what I expect can help it get at least 10-15m more OW
