Pre-sales are a little underwhelming, but who isn't hyped for this movie? I'll predict it to be a mega event until the numbers prove me otherwise. I will not conceal.

Let's say

$17M + $39M + $75M + $50M for $181M opening weekend, maybe a bit more if they really want it to beat Incredibles.

I hope no one panics or declares it a bomb after school day previews. I remember Shrek 2 opened on a Thursday in May and OD was considered disappointing. But then it broke the single day record by Saturday.

Eh. I think previews will still be 10m+. Frozen is appealing not just to children.

Shrek 2 did move up to Wednesday very late though- I think less than a month before release? And that was 2004, before people checked the internet on their phones every 30 seconds.

What if Frozen 2 only has like $7.5M previews? Will it recover over this weekend and next? Certainly. Will people spin it as “it”s going to make more than the first so that is Great”? Definitely. But that low preview will mean it isn’t drawing the non-family audiences en masse like many of us assumed it would, which is a ton of wasted potential. Beauty and the Beast opened on the school night.

The only way to truly judge Frozen 2's performance is over its first 10 days.

People were saying the same thing about Shrek 2 getting the non-family audience. I remember the original shrek increased it's non-family share over the course of its run from 20% to 40%. I'm not sure how much of it's popularity outside families is a reflection of the overall popularity of frozen, and how much of it is a percentage difference.

And the Jungle Book?

EDIT: No, Beauty and the Beast did not open on a school night. It was Spring Break. Look at Lego Batman numbers.

its previews are not strong. Could finish sub 9m. But great presales for the weekend. I am thinking 140m OW.

I feel like this will make as little as a Frozen 2 sequel was going to, which still might be alot. I'm not feeling that the plot and trailers did anything to increase its gross. This could've been top 3 grosser all time if they nailed it but seems like the execution was off

i have no idea what the story is. but like the first, Frozen is all about the legs, not the opening.

Shred 2 was a phenomenon and had room to grow off the original. Frozen already had its phenomenon type run. Not everyone would be willing to come back 6 years later, the industry has changed a lot. It will increase, but it’s marketing dropped the ball big time, and the legs won’t be as good Judging from the reception

The original Shrek sold hardly less tickets than the first Frozen.

Shrek 2 released in an era where there were hardly any CGI flicks releasing. I think the next one was the incredibles released in November. Also Box office that year was weird. Early may had multiple disappoints(Troy, Van Helsing and even day after tomorrow did not do as well it should have). June had HP3 but that fizzled out after big OD. Only SM2 did great that summer. So Shrek 2 had so much room to run. Now we have monthly CGI flicks opening and calendar is busier. So no way F2 will have a run similar to Shrek 2. Plus F2 still has had big Presales.Dont think Shrek 2 PS was anything worth discussing.

Didn't the BO go into a slump before F2? I thought most of us discussed that how good it is for Frozen to be released in this atmosphere.

It's still going to be considered a big success in the end, but man does this and Toy Story 4's performance make Shrek 2 and Incredibles 2 performances even that much more impressive. It's definitely not that easy for these animated sequels to reach MEGA-EVENT movie status compared to other genres like the superhero movies.

These proclamations of doom and gloom are premature. EVERY film opening here has disappointed opening weekend since New Moon, and other than JL and FB:COG, they’ve recovered pretty well over the holiday. This frame is just not one people rush to when there’s a whole week of days off work and school ahead.

doom and gloom during a year where the OW was not just beaten but obliterated.

If an original movie had Frozen 2's plot and marketing, would it feel like a hit? Fuck no. People don't care about Elsa harmonizing the 4 elements of nature. They cared about advancing the relationships between the characters

... you right lol. For a good chunk of the movie the characters are separated from each other.
