Post Worst Since 1985
So June had the lowest drop from the previous June by far since 1985, and even then it was only worse by a narrow margin. Adjusted, this was the worst June ever.

Has something fundamental changed in movie-going?

Dark Phoenix, MIB4, Pets 2, and Annabelle 3 all had rather alarming declines from their predecessors, and original movies aren't doing well either. Even in May Godzilla had a fairly alarming drop.

Some of this is probably the Avengers affect - it's really hard to follow up an A+, 850m, culmination-of-11-years movie.

But people are just not seeing movies all of a sudden. And they seem to be more critical of those that they do see. Second weekend drops have been worse than usual, Cinemascores are down. People seem to be concentrating their money on a few select films now.

It feels somehow like there was a big sequel bubble and it has popped, or it was it a movie bubble in general, or a non-Disney bubble? Nothing Disney has suffered, even if people are feeling personally disappointed by Toy Story 4 or Spider-man FFH.

Could we be in a new era? Maybe it's just a one-off and we'll be back to normal. Curious your thoughts.

Probably people are now getting caught on and just streaming movies and tv shows on Netflix and Amazon. Whats happening to old arcade centers, music video stores and video rental shows are probably catching up to theaters. People arent going to movies unless its produced by Disney

I assumed it was because the June movies just looked bad (they really did), but Far From Home had great marketing and it is also underperforming. So maybe the Summer Slump goes beyond quality of choices.

Yeah this summer has been pretty shitty lately. Outside of Aladdin and John Wick it really feels like people just aren't showing up for many movies, and even when they do the numbers still don't seem all that impressive like in the cases of TS4 and FFH. If Lion King doesn't explode now I really think there is something wrong with the state of movie-going in general, although it's not like the effects of streaming and television are anything new.

The Jan-Feb period was also the 4th worst drop and the worst since 1998, albeit in part that is the drop from having Black Panther in 2018.

Hobbs/Shaw will sort of be the first big test, in the wake of Lion King.

Are people really complaining about the first Summer to ever have 5 300+ earners? Those were some really bad movies that came out during that period with pretty shaky marketing. Spider-Man, TLK, OUATIH, and H&S.

One of the June movies should have come out in Mid-Late August. Too many bad sequels in a row. Men in Black or Dark Phoenix maybe could have done a little bit better especially DP shoehorned between Endgame and Spidey.
