I'd be stoked if Late Night could get to $6 mil OW. Shaft might not hit $10 mil?! MIBI now might miss $30 mil?!

Save us Woody, you're our only hope.

This summer is a disaster.

Even worse than Dark Phoenix. I am not surprised, no one asked for a Men in Black Film without Will Smith.

Disney is killing moviegoing. Seriously. It's depressing. People don't go to the theater anymore (this summer) unless it's a big Disney film. It's quite depressing.

Or maybe Disney is the only thing preventing a collapse of the BO.

People are becoming choosier and choosier about what they see in the theater it seems like. Still can't believe Dark Phoenix bombed like that.

2019 movies that have severely underwhelmed at the box office:

Shazam!
Pikachu
LEGO 2
Godzilla
Phoenix
Little
Long Shot
Happy Death Day 2U
Brightburn
Late Night
MIBI
Shaft
SLOP2
Rocketman?

The only non-Disney films that have really done well or met expectations are:

Us (I guess, probably actually was a tad depressed)
HTTYD3 (though a finale to a greatly reviewed trilogy should probably gross the most)
The Upside
Madea?

I don't know man, maybe 2019 has just sucked for movies in general?

I think it's just that people would rather wait for streaming unless it's must see.

John Wick 3 has done really well and met/surpassed any reasonable expectations. FYI!

Maybe I'm going insane. By this time last year, we had 10 films over $100 mil, this year we have 12 already.

Just seems like this year sucks so far.

I think Shazam was. You can almost compare it to Incredible Hulk. They both followed up huge same franchise films. But Shazam had wonderful reviews, while Incredible Hulk did... not.

This.

That's why the mist see films are getting bigger and the bottom has fallen out of the mid range film market.

I'm guilty as charged on this also. In theatres - It's either an event film or arthouse/awards later in the year and nothing in between.

I really think Shazam would have made more if it wasn't sandwiched between Captain Marvel and Endgame. It needed space and in hindsight early Feb would have been prime.

Disney films are sucking the life out of the box office but you also can't deny studios are putting out unappealing and unececessary sequels. In the flip side - Disney just happens to own franchises everyone likes - Marvel, Pixar, SW, Disney animation etc. No surprise.

I do think things will pick up from here though.

A movie just opened to fucking THREE HUNDRED FIFTY SEVEN MILLION in 3 days and we talking about movies being dead?

We're 1 1/2 years removed from a horror movie opening to $121m.

A lot of these are just horrible ideas that everyone knew nobody would want to see. There was ZERO demand for a new men in black, and almost as little demand for another Godzilla movie.

These flops were always going to be failures, they were failures at the conceptual level. An original film is better than a known property that nobody wants.

That's right though. Movies aren't dead - viewing habits have shifted. So hence the biggies get bigger.

Though one thing hasn't changed - audiences will steer clear of turds they don't want to see. Just so happens we've had three weeks in a row of these.

Its also worth noting that these movies can still find an audience when they're made well. if MEN IN BLACK INTERNATIONAL was sitting with a 95% on RT, it would find an audience at some point.

Films that nobody was asking for that ended up doing well in recent years:
-jurassic world (ok some people wanted this one)
-Jumanji 2
-Mad max 4
-A Star is Born remake
-Oceans 8
-Bumble bee
-It remake
-murder of orient express remake
-Creed 1 and 2
-tarzan
-magnificent seven remake

Films no-one wanted that also sucked
-childs play remake (soon)
-Independence Day 2 (well some people wanted this but it still sucked)
-Men in black international
-godzilla 2
-remake of x-men: the last stand
-hellboy 3
-tomb raider remake
-overboard remake
-my big fat wedding 2
-terminator genesis
-ted 2
-the huntsman 2
-zoolander 2
-another Robin Hood movie
-another King Arthur movie
-power rangers
-the mummy remake
-alien 6
-the predator

I can see the Paramount and Sony film divisions getting sold to an equity firm, bank, or to the Chinese within 5 years.

We could have had MIB v 21 Jump Street - now that's a hit.

Yeah what did happen with that idea? Sure would've done more than just sticking the leads from another MCU film expecting a decent hit.
