Have to give credit to LY. It managed to not only ruin its OW but also its second in spectacular fashion. It may be the reason we don't see 5 $20M+ movies this weekend despite having IMAX screens. If it finishes with less than The Good Dinosaur ($123,087,120), would be hugely embarrassing.

Yay for the openers. Very encouraging demo breakdown of Elvis from Deadline:
-58% female
-30% OVER 55, 61% over 35 years old
-5/10 of the biggest showings were in the south.
-21% PLF screens
-Diverse audience: 62% Caucasian, 20% Latino/Hispanic, 7% African American, 11% Asian/other

The box office is getting a huge jolt from older moviegoers showing up with TG, JP and Elvis! TGM looks set for $30M in its 5th weekend. It's passing $500M today! Just an unbelievable run.

Good for the openers and Top Gun. Rough drops for everything else though. Dominion's dream of $400M isn't looking great.

Great for Elvis and Phone. Both should have good legs too.

Top Gun’s run is amazing and well deserved.

Lightyear’s drop is dismal but deserved seeing it’s not very good.

I hope Maverick ends up taking #1 again. It certainly could happen. I think this is its last chance at that.

Will be close but TGM looks like it will just eek past Titanic ($30,011,034) for #2 of all time for 5th weekends behind only Avatar ($42,785,612).

If it tops $30M, will be only the third movie in history to do 5 $30M+ weekends in a row. Good company to be in the same conversation as Titanic and Avatar as the only other two movies to do it.

I don't think Titanic had 5 $30m+ (unadjusted) weekends...?

Yes, you are correct I made an error there. It would only be the second movie in history to do it after Avatar! It's 1st and 4th weekends were below $30M but it's 5th weekend was above that level.

Lightyear is a disaster so far in the u.s, and i dont think disney+ is the main culprit, the movie is really mediocre imo.

Film quality is killing LY legs, but its opening is a testament to a much larger issue. No doubt the same sex kiss controversy hurt it as did D+. Pixar needs new release strategy with commitment to 90 day window etc

Cutting Tim Allen from the film removed most of the association of the film with the original series. That was IMO the #1 reason for its underwhelming performance and was a major mess up.

Lightyear honestly could've worked better as a streaming series. As a film it's just nowhere near Pixar's usual quality and forgettable fespite gorgeous animation. I think if Minions does mediocre too then it's more of a problem with theatrical animation but we'll see...

Minions was always going to see a big dropoff from the original. So unless it does like sub 125m, I'd say its still ok

Disney gambled on Chris Evans, with his Captain America fame, being more popular than Tim Allen in the role that he's most famous for. That backfired. Then lump in all the other stuff (the gay kiss, the mediocre finished product, the confusing nature of the film/toy basis, the lack of other Toy Story characters) and you've got something that's not simple and appealing like a kids movie should be.

pretty much :| I only feel sad for the creatives. The marketing department/studio dropped the ball.

I don't know the last time, but TOP GUN did the same thing back in 1986...

Funny that TGM won the weekend by $176. TG's original gross was $176,781,728. Hmmm... :funny:

The weekend is too close to call but nice to see them pull a 007 type box office estimate. TGM needs a 6.85 multiplier to get to $700M so a lot depends on the next two weekends. 5 $30M+ weekends in a row though off of a holiday weekend is uber impressive. Most importantly, it passed $1B this weekend!!

Great for the openers. LY had an even worse drop than I was expected which was already bad. This is Pixar's WORST summer film hold ever. Minions can lose half it's predecessors audience and still be seen as a win given how far LY has lowered the bar. It's probably the biggest disappointment of the year. I'm interested to see the studio spin on this one. Likely "we have the July long weekend coming up when lots of families will be catching it." NOPE. :funny:

NWH was #1 in its 6th and 7th weekends.

As far as during summer, I think GOTG was maybe the last

Thanks! They are in rarified company.

Only one film has grossed $30M in its sixth weekend, Avatar. TGM has a very good chance of joining that club.

(American Sniper doesn’t count since its first few weeks were limited releases)
