Ad Astra predictions
After months of looking like a non-existent movie, we finally have a trailer, which seems to be positioning it for the Gravity/Arrival/BR2049 "sci-fi/space movie for adults in the fall" slot. I doubt it finishes anywhere near the larger entries in that slot, but I think this is the kind of project where Pitt's movie star powers will be beneficial.
Opening: $22.5 million Dom. Total: $72 million (3.20) WW Total: $200 million

Re: Ad Astra predictions
This past decade has honestly been the best for sci-fi cinema since the 70s.

It does look good. And kind of has a hybrid 90s/70s vibe.
Sadly it probably wont make anywhere near what it should but $60-$70m may be on the cars.
Note that this and Ford V Ferrari are both 20th Century Fox films that Disney picked up. I wonder if this is the beginning of the end of these types of films being released theatrically. I suspect it may be.

Yup. Knowing Disney the closest they will make is McQueen v Mater. A lot of directors will probably look for other studios to house their production companies (Mangold, Ridley Scott,...). Cameron will probably stay because the Avatar sequels were already in development and Fox has the rights.

It's concerning that Fox Searchlight has announced a couple projects since the official merger (one with Barry Jenkins, another with Mahershala Ali), but 20th Century Fox has been quiet. I think both of these movies have a chance to break even, but I worry that breaking even just doesn't cut it in the Disney corporate culture. Which would suck, because Fox has seen some great success in the last feew years with unlikely non-franchise adult-aimed hits (Revenant, Hidden Figures, Bohemian Rhapsody). I imagine Disney likes Searchlight's Oscar success (something Disney has never really had), but doesn't really envy anything Fox can give it other than the library of movies and TV.

Arrival was Paramount and Blade Runner 2049 was Warner Bros. As long as there's a market for sophisticated big budget entertainment, other studios will make it. Whether or not there's an audience for it will depend on a lot of things. America is changing.

Saw the trailer, going to avoid future ones. Got Insterstellar/Gravity vibes.
September is looking really good.

The trailer for this looks really promising, but I have to agree with MadGez's range of a $60-$70M total unless it really gains some serious Oscar support and doesn't completely fizzle out like First Man did.

Disney used to have some Oscar success with its imprint Miramax, headed by the Weinsteins.

This is getting some strong reviews out of Venice and tracking is in the $20m OW range.
I think Jonathan's OP prediction is looking very likely (perhaps even a tad stronger).

Yeah, I'm really hoping Rambo doesn't come in third for the weekend, but while I could see that surprising to like 25, and this doesn't quite look as big as the other sci fi films, Pitt coming off of Hollywood and this being good should secure 30+
