Lucky Kong V Godzilla is pretty much in the can or soon will be. The addition of Kong will at least keep it over $100m domestic.

Not a great opening at all.

Actually, I'd forgotten that it had moved to March. Terrible slot.

These films just dont catch on do they.

Remember Zilla 98? That was primed to be the biggest film of the year with $250-$300m and it fizzled big time. I still remember the disappointment when the early numbers came in (even with the mid week opening).

To be fair Godzilla 98's 4day adjusts to 107 million and King Kong Adjusts to 305 million. In both cases expectations and budgets were way too high, and most importantly the movies were terrible.

This film had no room to recover from the last one. This is like having Batman and Robin being followed by slightly better Batman and Robin.

Terrible isn't the right word. Really bad performances from Black and Brody. Everything with Kong was fine enough, but it was a very boring film overall to general audiences. Out of Zilla 98, 14, 19 and Kong 05 and Skull Island, and I think Skull Island is the only one that was that seemed to be generally liked the most. People will see the next one for Kong, and that he hopefully kicks Godzilla's ass.

Though judging how all these Vs movies go, they'll get pitted against each other for one fight, then team up to fight other monsters at the end, and then go their separate ways. In this case, that at least works though, given the size differences. And dare I say they have the fights during the daytime.

Godzilla will go to Skull Island. Kong will use guerrilla tactics on his home turf to even the odds. They’ll eventually come to New York for a big showdown with a bigger monster.

Godzilla vs. Kong in a really interesting position. With Godzilla 2014 receiving such dire WOM and KOTM disappointing they are going to really have to sell the Kong angle considering it does seem like SI had the best WOM among general audiences. If Warner Bros can actually build some decent hype and if reviews aren't complete crap than I don't see why it can't have at least a $70-$80M OW regardless of the competition. Sure a GvK movie should have a lot more potential, but they are already going to have a hard time salvaging whatever is left of this franchise and at this point the bar is set so low that a $200M+ domestic total and a WW total of $600-$700M should be considered a win IMO.

It’s like the perfect example of the sort of generic sequel to have a big drop like this. The trailer is so forgettable. Nothing unique.
