Black Widow won’t finish sub 300m. People love the character and it’s the summer kickoff movie. A lack of fantastical elements didn’t stop the Captain America films from being big.

CA needed Iron Man to get past $400 mil, and that was at peak popularity.

BW won't have that, and her character just died, and her peak popularity was probably right after Winter Soldier.

I don’t think her character dying will have any negative effect. And at the point Winter soldier came out Marvel was still building an audience. If Cap 4 came out without Iron Man I bet it does 350m at least. Black Widow can get past 300 I think.

Black Widow looks to end up between $250-$350m IMO.

The more bullish estimate is largely due to the almost 1 year gap between Marvel films. There will be some pent up hunger for an MCU film - even if it is a lesser character.

BW's release date is biggest thing going for it. Against it:

-She isn't anyones favorite character
-She's been in a bunch of movies already
-It will be smaller scale

Maybe the biggest point...others have mentioned the point about it "all being downhill from Endgame" given everything was building to that etc. I agree with that point. With Endgame being over, I think all of the future movies will see smaller grosses than the past few years. Spider-man: FFH didn't exactly explode and Spidey is much more popular than BW.

I am thinking ~90/245 for this currently

Far From Home definitely benefited from Endgame. It had a post Endgame trailer linking it to endgame very well. The fact that it increased despite losing Iron Man from homecoming is impressive. Minus Endgame it would have grossed in upper 200’s.

That said I am with you on Black Widow prediction. its being overestimated. We have seen her in half a dozen movies since IM2 and she has not stood out. No real super power and even story premise(setting it between Civil War and Infinity War) makes it a spin off rather than an origin SH movie.

Update:

Onward Buena Vista 3/6/20
Mulan (2020) Buena Vista 3/27/20
Black Widow Buena Vista 5/1/20
Artemis Fowl Buena Vista 5/29/20
Soul Buena Vista 6/19/20
Jungle Cruise Buena Vista 7/24/20
The One and Only Ivan Buena Vista 8/14/20
Eternals Buena Vista 11/6/20
Raya and the Last Dragon Buena Vista 11/25/20

Cruella moves to 2021.

This is gonna be an interesting year. Disney doesn't have the guaranteed billion dollar picture for the summer.

Onward Buena Vista 3/6/20 - A Coco-type performance seems doable for this
Mulan (2020) Buena Vista 3/27/20 - Should do at least $180m domestic and $400m outside counting China, I don't think people will care that the star decided to post CCP propaganda on social media
Black Widow Buena Vista 5/1/20 - Does anyone honestly care about Black Widow? She doesn't even have powers. I could see this falling below $200m.
Artemis Fowl Buena Vista 5/29/20 - Flop! They even pushed it back a year despite a trailer out lmao.
Soul Buena Vista 6/19/20 - It's Pixar so there's always potential but I feel like this will be a more low key release than Onward.
Jungle Cruise Buena Vista 7/24/20 - The Rock is declining in popularity and this screams Pirates rip off. I smell a flop.
The One and Only Ivan Buena Vista 8/14/20 - Flop
Eternals Buena Vista 11/6/20 - It's Marvel so I guess it can't flop, but surely it's got to start deflating at this point
Raya and the Last Dragon Buena Vista 11/25/20 - Flop

Mulan, Black Widow and maybe 1 of the Pixar entries that connect I think have 300m potential.

Could nothing beat this year's Aladdin? Definitely possible.

I think with a weak superhero slate, Pixar dominates next year.

One Pixar and one Marvel will break out.

I'm guessing it's Onward and Eternals.

Onward looks... strange but it'll probably be able to do 200m.

Jungle Cruise looks pretty fun. If it's as enjoyable as it looks it could actually end up being a big hit.

The more interesting question is if a studio can take the domestic crown in 2020, ending Disneys four year streak (Disney is obviously winning 2019). WB seems like the obvious choice with 2 DC films, a Nolan film, and Godzilla/Kong (I think the concept of that has potential to push way above the previous films grosses).

Disney has become way too big, monstrous, generic and greedy for its own good, and even when taking about the good of the film industry in general. It would be nice for Disney to have some bad years, and get knocked down a few pegs.

If the studios were making quality big budget movies that somehow got drowned out by Disney then I would agree with you. That isn’t the case. IMO.

The failures of other studios in no way excuses what Disney has been doing in the last number of years.

I just want the studios to make movies I want to see. Over the last few years, that's been Disney more so than others.

I don't care if that continues to be case so long as (first sentence).

That's fine, although movie taste is obviously very subjective. If we're taking Disney, I much prefer Disney's catalog of releases from the 2000s, by far, over their catalog of releases in this current decade. Even in the 2000s, Disney was never the studio for me that made more films that I wanted to see over other studios.

Big difference is when ROTS released there were no plans for next SW movie. But Disney is churning them like they do for SH or CGI flicks. So I am not sure there would be the same sense of must see.

That said JJ will make a fun flick and so audience should show up just for that. As long as that happens it should increase from SW8.

King's Man moves again... feel like that's gonna flop. They should've just gone for a third film.

This year really could've used Avatar 2.

What do you mean? Isn't The King's Man the third film in the series?
