Post Is Ma a potential breakout?
I think casting Octavia Spencer as the horror villain is unique and the the kind of WTF move that could pay off. It should play well with the urban audience who went to Get Out and Us but also has some appeal to white people as well.

Great vehicle for Octavia but I don't see it being huge, that weekend is waaay too crowded. Should be a modest success though.

30 Million plus opening for sure and I'm thinking a total around 80 Million. Maybe more. Will definitely do well.

This reminds me of a lesser version of Don't Breathe.

Isn't this exactly the sort of thing that the SJW crowd should get up in arms about? The fact that she's black and an outcast villain? But I guess they won't because she's the lead. Such a fickle bunch.

They can't really because we have The Intruder this weekend with a white guy terrorizing a black couple.

This is the kind of movie that was made to dominate the off-season, but releasing in the nuclear heat of summer season is the wrong move. It could still find an audience, but I think they cut the potential of a perfect fall movie.

Don't Breathe is a situational horror relying on the atmosphere of a trapped house. Ma has more story to tell.

I have a feeling Ma might not get good reviews. So thinking $25m/$60m.

Reviews don’t really affect horror much, if at all really. I’m hoping it gets good reviews but I’ll see it even if it’s 0% lol, critics are way too harsh

Hence lesser version. This might not use trapped house setting but then again it is a situational thriller.

Not so sure about Ma being situational. It does not depend on the house (or basement) or a fixated situation. It's more a mystery thriller.

If this was the big new release on an August/September/October weekend I'd have this down for $40+ million opening weekend. On a May/June weekend where the other two openers will combine for at least $100 million, $20-25 million sounds about right.

I could see Godzilla and Rocketman coming quite a bit below that combined

I could see this potentially opening with more than Rocketman.

I agree with this assessment.

I don't think so. I feel there's more excitement for Rocketman. I expect it to be a 2/3-Bohermian Rhapsody hit (which it's clearly trying to emulate).

I think Rocketman looks great but I'm not sure how relevant Elton John is in today's culture. Queen songs are pretty well known and ubiquitous, ask someone about Elton John's songs to younger people and I bet they wouldn't have a clue. If Rocketman does do like 30m+ opening then we will get a ton of music biopics soon.

All true^

Elton John also isn't dead. It's a factor if you agree or not. Plus Taron Edgerton really isn't very liked among audiences. People cannot warm to him.

This will be a movie for people 30+ of age. $30m OW is not a very high bar to clear, IMO. Walk the Line opened to $31m adjusted. Rocketman has more energy and drama that it is looking to skew younger than that one. Is Elton John as iconic as Johnny Cash in North America? That's a question though.

I do agree it would have easily done 40+ then. Honestly it still would in May on a less competitive weekend. I'm not even posititve it can't get that when it does open. Just won't be as easy.
