Re: Weekend Estimate (April 5-7)
It was a good week for tracking. Shazam did a little better than the $50m OW tracking suggested and Pet Sematary hit the mid-$20m target. However, The Best of Enemies fell short of the $6m tracking.

I imagine that Shazam number will increase with actuals. I highly doubt it drops -33% today.

I guess people really don't care for Dumbo.

Dumbo disappointing sorta clears the way for Detective Picachu to have a mega breakout. More pent up demand for a family skewing film.

Last week one of my black facebook friends said: “Do we really need a movie about the leader of KkK and a legendary civil rights activist becoming friends? Hollywood gettin out of control with this Green Book shit”.
Now I agreed, but I figured the people who powered Green Book to almost $100M and a Best Picture win would show up for this one. Did the success of Green Book kill the “white redemption” movie or is this just an anomaly with poor marketing?

Re: Weekend Estimates (April 5-7)
Us is having some terrible weekend multipliers. $200M is out, it might not even catch Get Out. A shame for a movie that good, though it it is in line with many major horror openers and other genre pics.

The Best of Enemies looks like a derivative civil rights movie as it gets. Hollywood-ized true story sheen all over it

Shazam had a better Saturday hold, and is far more family friendly than Winter Soldier.

Nah, just sounds like your friend is a racist. Can't say I even saw a single commercial for Best of Enemies.
If I can remember correctly there have been a few films about two people from unlikely backgrounds striking a relationship in the past. Sounds like the film didn't do a good job translating the events though.

Re: Weekend Estimates (April 5-7)
Green Book itself was a soft performer until it started getting awards. I also think this is probably not a role Taraji Henson's fan-base is into (both in subject matter and lack of glamor, and yes, it was easy to to forget it was even out.

A movie like Best of Enemies needs great reviews to do well.

In what world is $84 million "almost $100m"?

Re: Weekend Estimates (April 5-7)
Heavy drop for Dumbo. Something about it did not click with audiences? Unplanned dropped 50% despite adding 40% more theaters. Guess the appeal of this kind of movies is limited. And did they stop having full-auditorium buyouts for this movie?

Re: Weekend Estimates (April 5-7)
Bad drops for Dumbo and Us. Guess the openers served as direct competition with those titles.
Hoping Shazam has enough steam to pass 175m.

Re: Weekend Estimates (April 5-7)
You could make a case for Us having direct competition, but not Dumbo. Twin that with its below-par opening, and I think it's safe to say that people just don't care for this live-action version of Dumbo.
Captain Marvel, which is closer to Shazam! than Dumbo is, had a nice drop.

Re: Weekend Estimates (April 5-7)
Shazam did great, would be interesting to see the legs on this because at the least I think the WoM is going to be mixed on this one. Great opening for PS, it has already earned what it was made for so even if it crashes from here on it should turn a profit for Blumhouse.
Poor drops for Us and specially Dumbo, Us is behaving as the typical horror movie whereas Dumbo is not attracting many audience.
Really surprised with that CM drop specially with direct competition. Its legs have been great thus far and next weekend is going to be another meh weekend, looks like it will cross WW's $412.5m domestic total after all.

Did the success of Green Book kill the “white redemption” movie or is this just an anomaly with poor marketing? I often get the impression these movies try to drop the historical context and relegate the political and economic grievances by African Americans at the time to triviality. I could imagine these were widely talked-about issues that were too big to ignore in the civil rights era. Instead these movies focus on making amends by having good inter-racial friendships while dodging the obvious consequences and repercussions of slavery and segregation.

Re: Weekend Estimates (April 5-7)
Shazam's $109m OS numbers seem to be disappointing. It only has Japan and it won't do much there. The rest of the markets it will mostly get past $250m-$280m.

Re: Weekend Estimates (April 5-7)
Yeah, It looks to do about Green Lantern adjusted. Considering 10 years ago it probably would have only done Punisher type numbers, it's pretty good. DC in general is much weaker OS, only really Aquaman and BVS, and TDKR passed 500.
