Wow great multiplier for Alita. It has two weeks of very light competition for action so it could make a run at $80M before Captain Marvel wipes it from the planet. That's still not great compared to budget, but it doesn't get a lot better for these types of un-branded movies in this market. Ready Player One's ~$130M is about the best they can do.

40m+ for Alita's 5-day is pretty surprising. Would be nice if it ends up doing 100m.

Yeah that is actually a pretty solid opening for Alita. If it doesn't completely get wiped out by Captain Marvel it might have a chance at crossing $100M domestic. Obviously, it will still be considered a big disappointment for the studio, but at least its not a Mortal Engines type disaster. I'm also kind of surprised by how poorly Happy Death Day 2U did. I was sure the first one was liked enough to push this one to a opening in the double digits, but I guess many of them weren't a fan of the bait and switch marketing since they were likely expecting more of a horror film than a comedy.

HDD2U opened higher than the first in many of the foreign markets it opened in this weekend. Here's hoping it does better overseas.
