Early Thursday #s
Alita - 8.5 Isn't it Romantic - 5 HDD2U - 2
Eh. Dark Phoenix would have done more than all 3 combined.

Re: Early Thursday #s
I feel like HDD should recover over the weekend but if it keeps this up sub-30 million total looks likely. Good that the budget was so low.

I don't know what happened with HDD2. I thought Blumhouse sequel was a safe bet

Re: Early Thursday #s
It is odd. I thought it would be the go-to Valentine's Day movie. If it didn't interest people on Thursday night then it won't do much damage on Friday night either, and the weekend isn't its time to shine at all, so I'd say its dead already. That's a shame. I thought this could have been a neat trilogy and a cool launch for Jessica Rothe.

Netflix just released a tv series called Russian Doll with the same gimmick as Happy Death Day, not sure how its ratings are but it's possible that hurt it a bit

Re: Early Thursday #s
2017 was the year of too much Dwayne Johnson. Looks like 2019 will be again with Hobbs and Shaw, Jumanji 3, and Fighting With My Family.
It will also be the year of too much Rebel Wilson. Isn't It Romantic, The Hustle, Jojo Rabbit, and Cats (not sure if that's coming out but it's still on the schedule).
She'll obviously be a fad that in ten years time will be as forgotten as the likes of Brendan Fraser, Kevin James, Tom Green, Anna Faris, and Rob Schneider.

Hey, Faris has a hit tv network show that just got renewed for two more seasons so let’s not lump her in with those others. She earns a lifetime of goodwill for her work in Smiley Face.

This is the box office bash forum, not the TV one. Faris was a comedy fad for a few years, now she's in the wilderness.

True, but wouldn’t we consider Overboard a hit just last year?

You're the only one that remembers it. Nah, you're right. I didn't realise it made $50 MILLION!!! Jesus.

Re: Early Thursday #s
I was legit surprised that it did that well. Only a 12m budget too.

Looks like another letdown weekend. At least things will pick up in a big way as we head towards spring.

Re: Early Thursday #s
Not an amazing number for Alita but higher than most of us expected. I’ll call it a win if it can get to #1 this weekend. It will still be a financial flop but at least not ridiculed for being one of the worst flops ever.

Re: Early Thursday #s
HDD2U tanking is even more of a surprise given the generous theater count, PG-13 rating, and lack of recent horror offerings, even if there isn't much "horror" in this one. A rare blemish for generally solid Universal. At least it should still turn a profit.

Re: Early Thursday #s
I don't think it will be #1 this weekend. I'd still bet on Lego Movie. But it's a great start for Alita. Looked like a flop. HDD2U got an extra $700,000 at least.

Deadline:
$7M/$22.9M/$27M - Alita $4.5M/$20.5M /$25.5M - Lego $6.5M 3-day - HDD2U
So kinda bad for everything.
