The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part - $1.5m Thursday 4pm start + $600k January previews

Have to think The Prodigy would have fared better in the hands of a stronger distributor. Haven't seen it but worth checking out.

Anything over $20M is great for WMW, but yeah the rest don't look that promising. This is going to be one pitiful February, especially with no big blockbusters. Dark Phoenix could have probably really benefited if Fox kept it in that February slot.

February is absolutely going to get pummelled vs. last year in particular. Luckily things will improve from March onwards.

WOW! The first Lego Movie opened to $69 million same date 5 years ago. LM2 OW is a disappointment compared to that.

I don't think a $40m OW for this franchise is disappointing given that the last movie in the series managed only $59m. I feel there is a potential for few more sequels but they need to look good or have better catch than just another Lego sequel. Also remember these are still very high numbers for Lego movies compared to past attempts.

Also from deadline:

The Lego Movie 2 - $11m/$40m (might go as low as $35m)
What Men Want - $7.8M/$20m
Cold Pursuit - $4.1m/$11.5m
The Prodiigy - $6.5m

The Upside - $6.5m
Glass - $6m

Lego Movie 2 bombed. Lego Batman played more like the film's sequel. But with that and Lego Ninjago they really killed demand.

Like Rolling Thunder mentioned The Prodigy would have fared better with another distributor. They didn't spend much on advertising. I personally never saw a TV ad. Only ads before videos on YouTube. Reminds me of a BH Tilt movie where they focus only on online advertising.

Not a bad hold for Glass. Deadline has The Upside dropping 18%. That's easily going to cross 100 Million. I really didn't expect legs to be so great but competition ended up weak. Very nice hit for STX.

Ninjago did $5.8m Friday, Lego 2 is close with $6.8m (minus previews). I don't see Lego 2 crossing $30m if the number holds

EDIT: Seems that the number for Lego 2 went down to $8.5m (and mostly lower than this given the trend throughout the day). As it stands $5.8m Ninjago Friday vs $6.4m Lego 2 Friday. I don't know why BOM is still saying $30m+ with this number.

 It is Flop City at the box office right now. We all knew Lego was trending in the wrong direction but to miss $30M opening would be absurd.

Do we think the Lego offerings on Netflix also contributed to the decline? There's quite a few spinoff shows on there. Have to imagine it only adds to the saturation. Makes me wonder if the HTTYD show on Netflix will also hurt the next film.

So its official people really don't give a shit about these Lego movies anymore. I know we all expected a decrease, but the fact that it could go sub $100M is just insane. I think the combination of the spin offs and the tv stuff has really taken the wind out of this franchise, because its already very over saturated.

There have been LEGO DTV/Netflix movies long before even the first LEGO Movie debuted.

Yeah the saturation is due to the movies in the franchise itself. WB wants all their franchises to become MCU and that's a wrong strategy. Even SW is declining from over-saturation for Disney.

The extra movie doesn't help, but sequels usually flop when people don't care about the characters or storyline from the first, and I think that's the case with LEGO movie. Who even remembered Pratt's character's name from it? In the LEGO universe every line is a joke because it's built on the idea that Legos being animated characters and Batman and Superman being in it is in itself funny, they even tried to be funny adding "The Second Part" in the title. How do you even die in the LEGO universe, could they just get a character a new head? It is the opposite of Toy Story which is sincere and makes Woody feel like a real person. Woody's arm ripping is significant because he is fragile and irreplaceable literally and figuratively, while LEGO is known for being largely indestructible and having replaceable parts

LEGO Ninjago killed the franchise. The Batman spinoff made sense and did well, but they diluted and oversaturated the brand with Ninjago and now there's no interest anymore. WB got too greedy killed a potential long-term franchise.

What Men Want is an interesting case. The marketing started out clearly aiming at a wide audience like the Mel Gibson movie, but I think the trailers looked too mean spirited and not funny enough, or WB realized Taraji is not a big enough name for a wider audience, and the marketing seems to have rerouted into selling it as a comedy aimed at black audiences with more emphasis on courting men (for example, posters switched from just Taraji to Taraji along with Tracy Morgan). So for that niche it's doing OK. But for a high concept comedy remake it's a disappointment.

Pretty shitty slate this month. No 100m grossers next week and HTTYD probably won't overperform. Captain Marvel is gonna massive.

$34.4M fo Lego. Great recovery but still a weak, Franchise-killing number.

Depending on how much it finishes with in Japan, Aquaman could potentially finish with more than Civil War WW lol
