It's interesting how with Marvel the team up films (Avengers and Civil War) outgross all the solo films (with the exception of Black Panther), whereas with DC the team up films underperform (BvS and Justice League) but launch solo films that are much bigger (Wonder Woman and now Aquaman).

It’s because the team up films are bad and the solo ones are good.

 Re: New Year's day #s
There isn't enough examples to make that assertion yet. Wonder Woman caught a movement at its peak, and Aquaman came out at Christmas. Suicide Squad is a team-up movie too, and that did remarkably well. Man of Steel is a solo movie that couldn't reach $300m. So let's wait for more examples before we make that conclusion.

Financially & critically the solo movies are winning.
Aquaman $950m - $1.1b Wonder Woman $821m Man of Steel $668m
Batman v Superman $873m Suicide Squad $747m Justice League $657m

 Re: New Year's day #s
The fact that Aquaman is about to be the highest grossing film of the DC universe...
And Black Panther is the highest grossing of the Marvel universe (among solo films)...
It really shows that the old understanding of what were the top superheroes is out of the window. Audiences want new and fresh and characters they haven't seen before on screen.

It's mainly because MoS, BvS and Justice League were directed by Zack Snyder (Though I think Superman is a hard sell overall)
